Turn, both of you, toward the grazing-ground of white and tawny gazelles.

And do not blame me, for longing has exhausted my patience.

If you two are not allies of passion and love,

Be made of rock, or of dry stone.

Within me is such love for graceful women, mistresses of coquetry,

That, were it in the revolving firmament, it would not turn.

Yet part of what my love for her brings me is this:

My eye is in Paradise, and my heart in Saqar.

I say, while longing has already laid waste to my liver,

And yearning hurls me into a perilous wilderness,

And my heart throbs, and both my eyes stay sleepless,

As though my eyes were created from sleeplessness,

On a night when the star lost its way in pitch darkness,

And your brother, the full moon, turned away from it in terror:

O you who have held my heart captive in love for you, and who

Have set my tears free through the beauty of your coquetry and modesty:

By the beauty and graceful length of your neck,

And by the enchantment in your eyes, their dark pupils against bright whites,

Grant me union with you, or return my heart to me,

For you hold the reins of benefit and harm.
