It struck, and struck nothing but knowledge and work—

The hand of Time—may God strike it with paralysis!

With a downpour of calamities and tragedies, it erased from

The pages of perfection the heart’s dark core and the eyes’ pupils.

God! What a grievous calamity, when it struck

A youth of proud dignity and virtue, rarely equaled.

And what a calamity befell us on the day of his death!

So God is enough for us in this grievous calamity.

O you on whom I pinned my hope of brotherhood,

After you, I am left in this world without hope.

So how do you fare without me? For I have indeed

Become absorbed in the memory of you, distracted from all else.

Alas for tender youth, now lying covered in dust

Beneath the earth, and for your well-proportioned form!

Depart, then, honored; may God grant you forgiveness

From Him, and magnify the reward of knowledge and work.
