If Lamya cannot fulfill the promise,
If (Lamiya) cannot fulfill the promise
my heart is with her—can she give it back?
Then my heart, can it bear a response to her?

Peace be upon her: if her affection ends,
Peace be upon her: If she persists in love
I see no escape from dying of grief.
I see no good in dying of sorrow for her

O glance that turned to anguish for my soul,
Oh a look that caused much regret
and brought into my heart a firestick of love for her!
And inflicted agony in my heart because of her love

A marvel of Lamya's beauty enslaved me;
Her beauty enslaved me
I am slave to no ruler but her beauty.
I am slave to none but her beauty

Alas for my liver, with a burning thirst that will not be quenched,
My liver is scorched with fires
as though its heat had set my entrails ablaze;
As if her burning coals were upon my insides

With sigh after sigh she wears me out
whose burning heat between my ribs never subsides.
Her breath between ribs cannot be extinguished

Yet when a breeze blows from the encampment,
But if a breeze blew from the beloved
I find coolness upon my heart in its breath.
I found its breeze cool upon my heart

Were it not for my heart's hope that wishes might grant
If not for hope that desires will be fulfilled
some of what I seek, I would have died of longing for her.
I would have perished from passion for her

Is it right before God that she should spurn me, while within my ribs, for her,
Does she disdain me, while for her
dwell daughters of heartache I cannot bury alive?
My heart harbors unrestrainable love?

She has never made me despair—and in despair there is relief—
Never has she despaired, and in despair is comfort
nor given me sincere affection since she turned away.
Nor has she ever reconciled after spurning me

And had she asked me to give up anything but my faith,
Even if she asked of me to change my faith
she would have found me neither tight-fisted nor miserly.
She'd see me obedient, neither disobedient nor unyielding

My friend, love is what your brother desires
then, by your Lord, bind my heart firmly.
So harden your heart for me

Tell them to dig my grave near her abode

And to wrap me, before my grave, in her gown
perhaps she will lament the plight of him she killed deliberately.
Perhaps it will make her weep for one she deliberately killed

The anguish of a thirsty man whose innards the heat has roasted,
No hunter finds that heat ripens
at a forbidden watering-place, turned away whenever he draws near,
The forbidden rose, if he draws near it blocked

If the calamities of time should one day visit me,
When the strikes of fate someday befall me
they find a tawny lion intent on warding off harm,
They strike a lion, not a submissive creature, in warding off harm

stout of spear-shaft, never found pliant by one who tests it,
The crucible of trial is not softened
even if a chewer were to find hard stone soft.
To the mocker, if the chewing stone itself is solid
