I marveled at the sea: it surges, then contracts,

And its breast forever rises and falls.

When it wrinkles and its streaks shudder,

You imagine it trembling, its skin bristling.

You see it, when the wind's breezes pass by,

Turn haughtily aside and take offense.

And wave after wave it kept sending forth,

Crawling, leaping, stumbling, then rising again.

It spreads out or writhes as it flows,

And holds a straight course and veers across it.

At times it wraps its skirts, and drags them

At others over the sand, as it plunges and kicks.

As it retreats upon its heels, it shows you

The lion's claws slipping off a smooth surface.

Shifting in desire, it has not attained a goal on one course

Before it has a goal on another.

Charging and retreating, swaying like a pendant

Among the ridges, or like a skin-bag being churned.

Beware the sea; do not be deceived by its calm,

Even if it feigns death until no pulse remains in it.

It froths and foams, roaring and clamorous,

And bristles, sometimes leaping and sometimes subsiding.

Rise and race and plunge as they break apart.

The horizon veiled itself in fright when the sea raged,

And kept trembling with terror and burning in anguish.

And the sun, behind the cloud's lofty plateaus, has

An eye that gazes fearfully and closes.

She cries to the wind for help when her pathways are lost

Within it; lightning guides her steps as it flashes.

And the earth trembles at what she dreads

From it, in anguish no other anguish can match.

It has rivaled the sky with its far-reaching expanses,

Neither diminution nor decay can ever overtake them.

Have you, then, seen a protected domain as vast as the sea,

Inviolable, and a dominion that never perishes?

Without it, no clouds would form, nor would rain pour

From rainclouds; not even in the sky is there a substitute for it.

For the earth—if you but knew—and the sky together,

Both beg from it and borrow.

No human hand has altered its beauties,

Nor has anything transient remained upon its swells.

Whoever is not protected by his own soul's valor,

Then no fortress or outer wall can shield him.
