He recalled union with her, then wept and went mad with love.

And at the memory of her, he nearly died of longing.

His blazing heart was set still more aflame,

And sleep was driven from his eyes,

By the lament of a dove calling to other doves.

    O dove, repeat the grieving one's lament;

Perhaps, in your lament, you will console me.

Then she spoke, taking up my yearning cry,

And her words deepened my sorrows:

“Can one lovesick soul console another?”

My tormentress, may your eyes live on!

For nothing remains to me but a last flicker of life.

So how long this unjust blame and coldness?

Is there no faithfulness to the promise among you?

So grant me reunion—and why only now and then?
