من أَنْ يُحيطَ بِكنهكَ المتفكرُ
Glory be to You, O God; You are too great
Glory be to You, O Allah, You are greater
for the thinker to encompass Your inmost essence.
Than what any contemplative mind can encompass

حارَ اللَّبيبُ وزاغَ عنكَ المبصرُ

ورمى فأَخطأ سهْمَهُ المتدبرُ
The wise were bewildered, and the clear-sighted strayed from You.
The wise one is confused, the onlooker strays from You
And the contemplative loosed his arrow, but missed.
And the thinker's arrow misses its mark

The mind's furthest reach concerning You is bewilderment.
The farthest the intellect can go is bewilderment
If it were possible, in an imagined likeness, for mankind to find
If it were proper for the creation to imagine

(Moses) at the noble Mount spoke intimately
and the Virgin's son rests just beneath Your throne;
(And the Son of the Maiden), Your throne rumbled

They gleaned but little of Your blazing light

If I were to look with the guidance of prophethood

I would not doubt that attainment is difficult.
I would not succeed in finding access arduous

Fashioning and creating are Your province.
It is Your affair to depict and originate
From Your sky, a blue page is Yours;
You have a sky-blue page from Your heavens

and the full moon is a royal monogram above its brow;
And the full moon over its forehead is haughty

and the luminaries are lines upon the page.
While the stars on the page are lines
The radiant sun fell before You in prostration;
The shining sun bowed to You prostrating

And its wave sighing turbulently
At evening it offers You prayer and remembrance.
Spends the night standing in prayer to You and remembering

Saturn is captive in bondage's collar, its head forced upward;
(Saturn) with the fetters of abasement tamed
and thunder cries aloud in supplication and glorifies You;
And thunder growling with supplication and glorification

and lightning is an eye of the deep darkness, flashing;
And lightning, a wink for the darkness, glimpsing
and from the clouds its tears pour forth;
And from the clouds tears pouring down for it

The collection of Your poetry abounds in masterpieces,
Your book of poetry brimming with gems

A collection of necklaces of mankind’s masterpieces
The body is a word in an unending song;
The body an unceasing chant

And the soul indeed the soul an innovative meaning
that has always captivated minds and dazzled them.
Continues attracting minds and dazzling

Is our soul a wind that blows and stills
or an ember within us that flares and dies down,
Or an ember within us that kindles and dies down

Or a visitor wavering between ardors
drawing near the tents of bodies and moving away?
Drawing near to the bodies’ innermost being and distancing

ماthere is no للحياةِfor life عَلَىdespite اختلافِthe variation of الشكْلِform حدْlimit
ما للحياةِ عَلَى اختلافِ الشكْلِ حدْ
One body is built up through it, another lies deserted.
A body it strengthens, and another it abandons
Life has no limit despite its differing forms:
What limit is there to life’s variety of forms?
حيٌّa living being يجودُgives generously بهاof it وَآخرُand another يستمدْdraws a supply
حيٌّ يجودُ بها وَآخرُ يستمدْ
وَالجسمُand the body يرفدُsupplies بالْحياةِwith life ولوeven if همدْlay inert
وَالجسمُ يرفدُ بالْحياةِ ولو همدْ
one living being bestows it, another draws it in;
One alive by it bestows, and another draws from it
and the body provides life even when it lies inert,
And the body gains life even if it slumbers

Like water, it remains water even if frozen
and the earth is a crucible that shapes and melts.
And the earth shapes and melts like pliable gold

Spiritual taste, inner feeling, and rational understanding,
Discernment, intuition, reason
and love are exalted signs and chapters;
And love are signs, they transcended and have seasons

Drawing meaning and esteem nearer

an accidental quality made clear, through which the essence shines.
An attribute from which the essence shone
Has one who never denied attained faith?
Has one attained faith who did not reject?

For the eye does not doze unless it has lain awake;
The eye does not sleep if it did not slumber
one who has not toiled does not know the meaning of ease;
One who did not struggle knows not the meaning of humility

And none savors water but the thirsty one
and dawn shines through the gaps of the dark nights.
And dawn emerges through the darknesses

If I express a meaning and render it incomprehensible

There is no way to the end or the way out

Of His kingdom; the King is truly majestic

Far beyond reach! This matter cannot be fathomed.
It is inconceivable; the matter is not one that can be gauged
No secret of the creatures is hidden from You.
Nothing of creation's secrets is hidden from You

You originated it and to You its secret essence returns
Their free choice is, in truth, their compulsion;
To guide it is in truth to compel it

In Your hands are the leading reins of kings and their forcing
The proud have come to submit to Your might.
The arrogant have become humble to Your might

Your blessed names are more majestic and loftier

And the soul recites the Merciful and aspires
