I have forsaken love of women with white necks and bosoms,

And black-lashed eyes and black tresses.

So I have grown indifferent to pleasure and youthful passion,

Though before today I was a wooer of budding-breasted maidens.

So amiable maidens and doll-like beauties no longer stir my desire,

Nor those of downcast gaze and long, finely arched brows.

I rebuked my heart for loving graceful women, and it desisted,

And grew still, though once it had been restless on every side.

Today I have shaken my hands free of every youthful passion,

And black calamities have whitened both my temples.

And is there room, O Sa'd, for youthful passion and pleasure

In a sorrowful heart brimming with afflictions?

To God alone I complain of my anguish and sorrow,

For indeed, my paths have narrowed around me.

And my fate has surrendered me to every calamity,

And my health and my nearest kin have disowned me.

And every close friend whose affection I had hoped for

Has withdrawn to one side, turning his shoulders away from me.

Alas, I am wronged, and have no father

    Who would grieve to see me humbled on every side;

Nor, likewise, a mother to share my sorrow,

Nor any brother or companion I can look to.

Ah, who will care for a child, should death appear to me,

Like a sandgrouse chick in the nest, still without down?
