Does your heart not flutter excitedly
whenever lightning flashes and spreads?
When lightning flashes and flares?

وأَذكى في الجوانِح منك نارا
It lit the fringes of darkness late at night,
It illuminates the edges of the darkness weakly
and kindled a fire within your breast.
And kindles a fire within your being.

سرى في ليلةٍ كرمتْ وَطابتْ

It coursed through a night both gracious and delightful,
It traveled on a night that was generous and pleasant
and its pitch-black darkness turned to day.
So its intense darkness became daylight.

أقمْتُ بها وَصحبي دارَ (سعد)

فأحمدناهما سعداً وَدارا
That night my companions and I stayed at Sa'd's house,
I stayed in it, and my friend's house, Sa'd,
and found both praiseworthy—Sa'd and his house.
So we praised them both, the bliss and the house.

Indeed, they raised its canopy into a sky,
They erected its canopy skyward
in which the lights blossomed in splendor.
With lights blossoming and thriving.

It was a haunt of gazelles, so much so
It had become familiar with comfort until
that they grew at ease and showed no alarm.
It forgot and showed no estrangement.

one that never ceases to stir my memory—
Does not cease, recalling it stirs emotion.

يخطُّ بصفحةِ الخدِّ احمرارا
was the bride's graceful progress, with a shyness
The bride's shyness on her cheek
that traced a blush upon her cheek.
Draws a blush of redness.

Her bridegroom's forearm was linked with one
And her groom's wrist is bound to a wrist
of hers; they seemed two branches walking.
As if two tender branches entwined.

Lighted candles surrounded them,
Lanterns lit like stars above them
so what I saw seemed a sky pouring forth light.
I imagine it a revolving universe.

She drew near, and he too, to an imposing priest,
We drew near a revered priest
who had taken the cross as his emblem.
Who had taken the cross as his emblem.

We stood listening attentively to what he read
Standing in awe, we listened to his recital
from the Gospel, quietly or aloud.
From the Bible, whispered or aloud.

وَأَحكمَ عقدةَ التزويج وفقاً

And he secured the marriage knot, in accordance
And he affirmed the marriage bond accordingly
with what Christ had prescribed for it.
As Christ had advised.

We said "Amen" to his words
we heard loud cries of prayer for him.
When we heard the invocation uttered.

And once the marriage was complete and had gone well,
The wedding concluded successfully,
we bade farewell to solemnity and decorum.
We bid farewell to gravity and dignity.

And we gave our souls free rein,
We freed our souls to indulge themselves
vying in what their sense of honor prescribed.
Competing in chivalry and restraint.

We continued sipping cups
of wine, or juice, or strong wine.
Of wine, juice, or any drink.

And at the plaintive strains of every kind of song,
Many were stripped of inhibition
many a person threw off the bridle.
By the rapture of song and music.

Faces grew veiled, and a swaying appeared
Faces were veiled but fondness was evident
in the guests' bodies; they were bewildered.
In the glances of those present, bewildered.

تفوقُ بحسنِ طلعتِها العذارى
And a tall, slender man approached a maiden
A slim graceful figure approached gracefully
who outshone the maidens with her lovely face.
Surpassing the virgins in beauty.

He bent her form and leaned over her,
She leaned her neck and we adored her
like a marble statuette bearing a frame.
Like a marble doll framed in pearls.

So he clasped her waist with his right hand, and she laid
Her waist was clasped in the right hand
her left hand upon his lowered shoulder.
And she rested her left arm on the lowered shoulder.

And his left hand had linked itself with her right,
She had attached her right hand to the left
so you could see no separation in their clasp.
You could not see them parted.

فظلاّ يرقصان عَلَى المثاني
ضروباًstyles لاno وَربّكby your Lord لاnot تجارىcan be matched
ضروباً لا وَربّك لا تجارى
So they kept dancing to the strings,
They danced to rhythms on the dais
in styles—no, by your Lord—that none could match.
In movements you could not compete with.

As though the places their feet touched were fire
As if the tapping feet were fire
in my heart, so their feet could find no rest.
Not giving my heart any peace.

At times they rouse the earth, plundering it,
At times they roused the ground fiercely
like a startled gazelle sweeping across the deserts.
Like a lively colt racing the desert.

And sometimes they deliberately shorten their steps,
At times they shortened steps intentionally
like a fallen fledgling treading yielding soil.
Like a fallen chick traversing pebbles.

When he cranes his neck toward her, she acts coyly,
When she arched her neck it seduced
now leaning toward him, now turning away.
Turning away then glancing back.

Do not ask about the poets around me
for verse surged within them and burst forth.
Their poetry gushed forth vigorously.

Souls, stirred by rapture, poured forth
Souls shaken with musical ecstasy
what leaves the sober drunk.
Pouring out words that intoxicate the wakeful.

O night when the fellowship
the Muslims' brotherly love for the Christians!
Of Muslims with Christians was manifest.
