    تخال به الأَجداثَ أسنمةً سحما

    And I visited a haunt of woe, while the night was pitch-dark;

You would think its graves were black humps.

Spirits wailed to one another through its gaps,

And above it the darkness had gathered clouds.

A gloom of sorrow makes the soul feel desolate,

And fills it with terror and robs it of resolve.

If you saw me, grief weighing heavily on my shoulders,

As I circle it, you would think me a decrepit old man.

I speak, my voice not carrying beyond my own hearing,

And my tears have indeed drenched the tomb and him it holds:

O grave whose earth has enfolded

One of noble character and illustrious lineage,

May morning showers water you at all times, and may

The tears of rain keep streaming upon you in torrents.

    And O you who lie here, I bring you a complaint;

Would that I knew: are you fully aware of it?

    I wish—and can wishing avail?—when I see

Your bier being borne, that I were a blind man.

    فما زلتُ منذ استوثقتْ أَغبط الصما

    And for a while I deceived myself about the news of your death;

So, ever since my soul was certain, I have envied the deaf.

And here I am: since you were laid to rest, my beds give no comfort,

Just as, since you were buried, I have tasted no sleep.

I asked my God to grant you joy,

Though you have bequeathed me grief after your passing.

Reflect, and you will find that death is an awakening,

If a man's life throughout his days is a dream.

If a man brings his judgment to bear upon life,

He sees, if sound of mind, its realities as illusion.

Yet praiseworthy among men is he whose soul

Rejects abasement and oppression in every circumstance.

For anyone who does not see lowering his wing as humiliation,

It has already set a brand upon the bridge of his nose.

May God curse a soul that accepts degradation and harm,

And disgrace a man who has deemed non-Arabs the equals of Arabs.
