    Gems from your words have

    shown me everything that captivates,

and conjured you before my heart,

so it went mad and persisted in love.

    O God, what has befallen

the lover's heart through your letters!

How often you have stirred a soul within me

that wrestles with me to meet you!

How often you have kept an eye of mine awake,

though the sight of you has never been its kohl!

Is it my doing, or yours?

Ever since my eye rested upon you

    in company at your gathering-place,

    at my soul's prompting, I almost—before

we were acquainted—called out to you.

These are things of which, before loving you,

I had never known the like.

    Upon my eye, which gazed,

tears and sleeplessness have pressed relentlessly.

there is no thought but you.

Your image, ever before my eye,

    distracts it from all others.

And remembrance of you never ceases—by your father!—

to be joined to my every breath.

    You stand present before me,

    whether far away or near.

    my heart feels their stirrings,

and my mind discerns their uncertainty.

I do not know: is it your pure milk

I am given today, or your diluted milk?

You softened your words, nay, held out hopes

of affection to me through hints.

Will you, then, make your meaning clear,

after this stage of doubt, by speaking openly,

    if what I have reckoned

is earnest on your part, not play?
