A phantom of Lamya never ceases sending me

Sorrows in the last hours of night, whenever I doze.

It draws tears to my sleepless eyelids,

Even as it kindles fires within my breast.

You did not see me, with night gathered thick,

Scattered in thought, bewildered in the phantom's wake.

You would have thought me a mother whose only child had strayed

From her, so she filled the horizons with [lamentation].

My patience had been faithful when I turned to it

In hardship, but in love it betrayed me.

What use is it to me if its help is hard to obtain

Before her, beside whom everything else is slight?

O sigh that, as the stars withdrew, drew forth

From the eyes a torrent and a steady rain!

    It reached Lamya's ear to intercede for me;

Had it passed over hard stone, the stone would have softened.

    I almost die of longing while one dwelling still unites us;

How then shall I fare when the hour of separation comes?

And a fair night among the nights of union—

Our thoughts and whispered confidences remained chaste within it.

We spent the night on the slope, while darkness pitched

Its tent ropes and corner-posts over the hills.

But for the gleam of her front teeth, I could not have found

Watering places that quenched a thirst-maddened man with sips.

She pitied my lament as I pitied hers,

And the star above us pitied our lament.

Nothing troubled me but sighs that, when they parted

From her heart, brought sorrows to my own.

I tried to lift the shadows of her anguish,

That made her taste sorrow's choking pangs in many forms.

I left no incantation or charm handed down

Without invoking it over her, in secret and openly.

So, after much effort, I saw that what afflicted her

Was her remembrance of kin and homelands.

She remembered her people, the sons of Ya'rub, when

They were the mightiest kings on earth in sovereign power.

They ruled the kingdoms from India to al-Andalus,

Establishing justice and benevolence within them.

Then she let tears flow, whose downpour made

The garden of hopes luxuriant after drought.

She said: "I have known those whose roots trace back

To the foremost chiefs of Qays and Qahtan,

Each a fierce warrior, staunch defender of his domain,

Who never submits to oppression, wherever he may be.

It has been their nature since the days of Ya'rub

To refuse all acquiescence or submission to humiliation.

So what ails them—may God not dim their judgment—

That some of them sometimes stray in their views?

So convey to the people a message from Lamya,

Which people carried, caravan after caravan:

Our souls were not freed from Turkish fetters

For us to become slaves to others than the Turks.

The pure blood that was shed will not consent,

Nor souls that left their bodies upon our native soil,

Nor those who, to attain glory, in every battle

Flocked to death, the gray-haired and the young,

To a single cubit of our homelands being violated,

In Sinai's plain or Lebanon's rugged terrain.

And whoever's independence is bought with blood

Will never suffer loss after that gain."
