By the life of your noble father, never have I gained experience

Of my times without adding misfortune to my misfortune.

Time makes me choose between two things, neither of them good:

Wronging another, or acquiescing in injustice.

I have suffered—and how often truth makes its people suffer!

Who, then, can let me spend my life in illusion?
