أَلاAh! منwho لصبٍfor a lovesick man كادnearly منfrom وجدهhis longing يقضيdies
بكىwept بعضُهone part of him مماfrom what يلاقيhe endures عَلىover بعضِanother part
Ah, who will help a lovesick man almost dying of his longing?
Alas! Who suffers love's agony
One part of him wept over another for what he endured.
Parts of him weep for other parts
تأوَّبهvisited him by night منfrom حبlove (لمياءLamya) طائفٌa phantom
فباتso he spent the night علىin حالٍa state منof الخبْلِmadness لاnot ترضيpleasing
A phantom of love for Lamya visited him by night,
Love for Lamiya left him distraught
so he spent the night in a state of madness that brought no joy.
In a state of confusion, dissatisfied
إذاwhenever ذُكرتْwas mentioned لمياءُLamya ظلّتْremained دموعُهhis tears
وأنفاسُهand his sighs موكولةًentrusted ليدِto the hand الفيضof overflowing
Whenever Lamya was mentioned, his tears remained—
When Lamiya was mentioned, his tears flowed
and his sighs—entrusted to the hand of the flood.
His breath dependent on her generosity
وأهوىand he thrust بكفيهwith his two palms لفيهtoward his mouth وقلبهand his heart
فأدماهماso he bloodied them both منfrom شدَّةِthe intensity الحرِّof the heat والعضِّand the biting
And he thrust his hands toward his mouth and heart,
He put his palms to his mouth and heart
and bloodied them both with fierce heat and biting.
Wounding them with intense heat and pressure
حذاراًfor fear وبقْياًand for self-preservation أنْlest أريعَI turn back لكاشحٍto a spiteful foe
فيقضيand so he decrees عَلىupon قلبِthe heart المتيمِof the love-stricken man ماwhatever يقضيhe decrees
For fear, and to spare myself, lest I turn to a spiteful foe,
I'm wary of a slanderer who would
who would wreak upon the love-stricken heart whatever he wills.
Deal the heart of the lover a fatal blow
أعيذI invoke protection for نحولاًemaciation منكfrom you إنif تهدريyou squander دميmy blood
فإنَّfor indeed دميmy blood عبءٌa burden لدىbefore اللهِGod فيat العرضthe reckoning
I invoke protection for my wasted frame from you, should you spill my blood;
I take refuge from harming you though you chide me
for my blood is a burden before God at the reckoning.
For my blood is a trust with God, to be honored
تحملتُI bore فيin حبَّيكlove for you (dual form) ماwhat لوif أقلّهthe least of it
تحمَّلهbore it طودٌa towering mountain لآذنwould surely warn بالنقضof collapse
For love of you I bore so much that, had even its smallest part
I've endured for love of you what if borne
been borne by a mountain, the mountain would have heralded its collapse.
By a mountain, it would signal collapse
I entertained as a guest الهوىlove بالدمعِwith tears حتىuntil نزفتهI drained it
فأكرمتُso I honored مثواهits dwelling بلحميَwith my flesh والنحضand lean flesh
I fed love as my guest with tears, until I drained them;
I housed passion with tears until it bled out
then honored its dwelling with my flesh and muscle.
Honoring its home with my flesh and pulse
تألّبَbanded together أهليmy family كيso that يميتواthey might kill صبابتيmy yearning
فكانواso they became قذىًgrit بالعينِin the eye لكننيbut I أُغضيclose my eyes
My family banded together to kill my yearning,
My family turned hostile to kill my youth
so they became grit in my eye, yet I close my eyes to them.
But to me they're motes though I am gentle
وأحفظهمand enraged them كتمانconcealment of أمرِكِyour affair فانطوتْso folded shut
صدورُهمtheir breasts مماfrom what كتمتُI concealed عَلىupon بغضhatred
And concealing your affair enraged them, and so
I conceal your affair so their breasts tightened
their breasts closed over hatred for what I had concealed.
From what I hid, over their hatred
فلوso if أنَّindeed إنساناًa person يكاتمkeeps secrets from نفسَهhimself
لكنتِthen you would be إلىto نفسيmy own self بحبِّكof love for you لاnot أُفضيI confide
So if a person could keep secrets from himself,
If a man could hide from his own soul
you would be one whose love I would not confide even to my own soul.
I wouldn't divulge my love for you to myself
رمىmay strike اللهُGod كفيmy hand إنْif أشارتْit gestures بشلّهاwith its paralysis
وجازىand may punish فعميmy mouth (apparent typo) إمّاif ever تكلّمit speaks بالغضِّwith restraint
May God strike my hand with paralysis if it makes a sign,
May God paralyze my hand if it signals
and punish my mouth, if it speaks, by silencing it.
And blind my eyes if they reveal disdain
وجدتُI found الهوىlove حلواًsweet عَلىdespite كلِّevery علةٍaffliction
وَحكمand the judgment ذويكof your kin الجورinjustice لكنهbut it مرضيis pleasing
I found love sweet despite every affliction,
I found love sweet despite every sickness
and your kin's judgment unjust, yet pleasing to me.
Though your people's tyranny is hard to bear
هنيئاًmay it be blissful لعينيكto your eyes المنامsleep فإننيfor I
وَجدتُI found سهاديmy sleeplessness فيكover you أهناmore blissful منthan الغمضsleep
May sleep be blissful to your eyes, for I
My eyes happily sleep, for in you
have found my sleeplessness over you sweeter than slumber.
I found my pillow, a respite from sorrow
لئنeven if ساءنيdistressed me أهلوكyour family ترقبُwatching for زَوْرَتيmy visit
لقدindeed سرَّنيdelighted me أنْthat مِزتنيyou singled me out بالهوىwith love المحضunmixed
Though your family distressed me by watching for my visit,
If your family disfavored me, I anticipate
it truly delighted me that you singled me out for pure love.
Visiting you, for pure love brought me joy
تعاليcome نفتهمْlet us elude them هاربينfleeing فإنناfor we
إذاًthen لبعيشٍsurely in a life، ماnot يُكَدّرُis troubled، ذيpossessing خفضease
Come, let us elude them in flight, for we
Come, let's flee them, for then we would have
would then surely live an untroubled life of ease.
A life free of turbulence and worries
كأنيas though I بهاwith her قدalready أشعرpervaded الوجدlonging قلبَهاher heart
فمالتْso swayed بهاher هوجاءa wild gust كالغُصُنِlike a branch الغضِّtender
It is as though I see her: longing has suffused her heart,
It's as if passion made her heart ache
and a wild gust swayed her like a tender branch.
And she swooned like a supple branch
وَأسلسand became pliant ليfor me بعدafter الجموحwild resistance قيادُهاher rein
أصرِّفُهI direct it ماas شئتI wish بالبسطby letting out والقبضand drawing in
And after her wild resistance, her rein yielded to me;
After refusing me, she gentled her reins
I guide it as I wish, letting it out and drawing it in.
Letting me guide her how I wish
