Ah, for the days of tender youth!

How blissful life would have been, had they not passed!

For a time I lived in bliss beneath their shade,

Drunk with youth's intoxication, my thirst fully quenched,

I sought what bloomed in the meadows,

And came to drink sweet water from the pools.

And many a fair-haired woman, resembling the midmorning sun,

Strutted merrily in the mantle of youth.

    Fair-skinned, like a peerless pearl,

Her breaths were sweet and cool.

    Slender, full-thighed, her waist slim,

Soft on both sides of her spine, tender of back,

Tall and slender, supple of form,

    Swaying, with quivering buttocks.

Her forehead was radiant as the full moon,

When it appears on the fourteenth night.

And her hair was like blazing gold,

And her neck and chest were like ivory.

    تأْتلقانِ كائتلاقِ الفرقدِ

    Two green eyes like peridot

    Sparkled like the star al-Farqad;

    Never flagging, they spun enchantment

Into snares in which captives abounded.

And her lashes were luxuriant, lush, long and thick,

And above them, a finely arched and tapered brow.

And her cheek was rosy and smooth,

And her glance was a polished sword of Indian steel.

As for her front teeth, they gleamed

From a smiling mouth like carnelian,

Like pearls flashing when arrayed in a row,

Or like lightning gleaming from behind the twilight glow.

Her breath would sober a drunken man,

As rain-drenched flowers give off fragrance.

It was as though between her bosom and her throat

Lay a deep expanse of water, or the whiteness of flowers.

From there rose a sweet fragrance,

More stirring to the soul than her face.

Her bosom—may my soul ransom it—was like

A deep expanse of water in the sun's rays.

    دأْبهما الإغراءُ والتحدي

    Two breasts stood forth, poised to confront;

Their habit was enticement and challenge.

I saw her wrist and forearm,

Both striking a fire-stick to kindle passion.

When I took her hand in mine,

My heart fluttered for her—how it fluttered!

Not one quiet vein failed to pulse,

Nor one buried wish failed to stir.

    ما أبلغَ العيونَ إذْ تبينُ

    Her eyes spoke through their enchantment;

How eloquent eyes are when they express themselves!

The loveliest hand, in palm and all five fingers,

You would take it for fine white silk, so soft it was.

I thought of pressing it to my chest,

But feared it would cast me into the embers.

Until, when both palms grew moist,

    And fingers entwined with fingers,

And breaths swelled and collarbones rose,

And veins surged, and tears streamed from the corners of her eyes,

And her cheeks had blazed with bashfulness,

And her breasts quivered above her chest,

She breathed like a breathless gazelle fawn,

And trembled like one chilled by cold.

And the withdrawal of her hand from mine was

Like snatching the cup from a drinker draining its last drops.
