أرأيتَhave you seen رأسَthe head of التيسِthe billy goat ساعةَwhen يسمطُit is scalded
He shaved his moustache and beard close, both together—
He shaved his mustache and beard clean off together.
Have you seen a billy-goat’s head when it is scalded bare?
Have you seen a billy goat's head when it is scalded?
وَمشىand he walked العِرضْنَةَa sideways swagger حاسراًuncovered علىon رأسهhis head
فكأنهso he seemed like إذْat ذاكthat moment قردٌa monkey أشمطgrizzled
And the hulking brute walked with his head uncovered,
And he walked with a sideways swagger, his head uncovered,
so that, just then, he looked like a grizzled ape.
so, at that moment, he seemed a grizzled monkey.
وَيشيرand he gestures إِذْwhen يهذيhe babbles بعشرِwith ten أصابعfingers
وَيدورُand he spins مثلlike أبيfather of الرياحthe winds وَيلبطand flails about
As he raves, he gestures with all ten fingers,
And as he babbles, he gestures with ten fingers,
and wheels like Abū al-Riyāḥ, thrashing about.
and spins like Abu al-Riyah and flails about.
وَكلامُهand his speech متقطعٌbroken up بسعالهby his coughing
كالعيرlike a donkey يبهرُgrows breathless فيduring النهيقِbraying فيعفِطthen snorts
His speech is broken up by his coughing,
And his speech is broken up by his coughing,
like a donkey that grows breathless mid-bray, then farts.
like a donkey that grows breathless braying, then snorts.
فكأنَّهso he seems like بضجيجهwith his din وَعجيجهand his clamour
ذوone afflicted with جنّةٍmadness بقيودِهin his chains يتخبطthrashes about
With all his din and clamor, he seems
So, with his din and clamour, he seems
a man possessed, thrashing in his chains.
a madman thrashing about in his chains.
لمdid not يحكهmatch him بالقبحin ugliness إلاّexcept كالحٌa grim-faced man
سمجُrepulsive الجبلَّةِinnate nature بالنذالةِin vileness مفرطexcessive
None can match him in ugliness but a scowling wretch,
None matched him in ugliness but a grim-faced man,
coarse by nature and consummate in vileness.
repulsive by nature, excessive in vileness.
قدindeed جفَّhas dried up منof ماءِwater الكرامةِdignity وَجهُهhis face
لكنهbut it قحةًimpudence وَلؤماًand baseness ينقطdrips
The water of dignity has dried from his face;
His face has dried up, drained of the water of dignity,
instead, he drips shamelessness and baseness.
yet it drips with impudence and baseness.
جهمٌgrim-faced كظلِّlike the shadow of الصخرِrock منwhoever يرهsees him يقلْsays
هوit is وَجهُthe face of مَيْتٍa dead man فيin السُخامsoot محنّطembalmed
Sullen as a rock’s shadow—whoever sees him says:
Grim as a rock's shadow—whoever sees him says:
“It is the face of a dead man, embalmed in soot.”
It is a dead man's face, embalmed in soot.
فإذاso when تمعّرhe scowls أوor تكثَّرَputs on airs ضاحكاًlaughing
فكأنهso it is as though he منfrom وَجههhis face يتغوطdefecates
And when his face contorts or he bares his teeth in laughter,
So when he scowls or puts on airs while laughing,
it is as though he were defecating through his face.
it is as though he were defecating out of his face.
وَإذاand when تنحنحhe clears his throat فيduring الكلامِspeech حسبتهyou would take him for
ثوراًa bull يخورُbellows عَلىover العليقِthe fodder وَينحطand grunts
And when he clears his throat while speaking, you would think him
And when he clears his throat while speaking, you would take him for
a bull bellowing over its fodder and lunging down.
a bull bellowing over its fodder and grunting.
