أَقولُ لصاحبي والشيخُ يجثو
لينظرَto behold بينناbetween us الرودَthe supple young woman الفتوراlanguid
لينظرَ بيننا الرودَ الفتورا
I say to my companion, while the old man kneels,
I say to my friend as the sheikh kneels down
To behold the supple, languid young woman between us:
To look between us with coolness and detachment
أَلاpray استرهاcover her سُتِرْتَmay you be shielded فَضَحْتَyou have exposed صبّاa lovesick man
أَلا استرها سُتِرْتَ فَضَحْتَ صبّا

أهاجَ بقلبِه الحبُّ السعيرا
“Pray, cover her—may you be shielded! You have exposed a lovesick man
Be discreet! In covering it up, you’ve exposed it, dawn!
In whose heart love has stirred a raging fire.”
Love has set his heart aflame with passion
فقالso he said كذاكjust so طُلاّبُseekers اللآليpearls
فقال كذاك طُلاّبُ اللآلي

تغوصُ لقاءَ بغيتِها البحورا
So he said: “Just so do seekers of pearls
So say those who pursue the unattainable
Dive into the seas to attain what they seek.”
Plunging into the depths to attain their desire
