أَرْخَتْit let fall منof الظلِّshade أرداناًsleeves وأذيالاand trailing hems
And a tree at al-Liwā, thick-leaved, with spreading shade,
With branches leaning down in gentle shade
let fall sleeves and trailing hems of shade.
Trailing long skirts of shadow o’er the glade
تحنوbend tenderly الغصونُthe branches علىover مَنْwhoever يستظلُّseeks shade بهاbeneath it
كأُمهاتٍlike mothers إذاwhen يرأمنَthey tenderly cherish أطفالاchildren
The branches bend tenderly over whoever seeks shade beneath it,
The boughs bend kindly over those who rest
like mothers when they tenderly cherish children.
Beneath, as mothers o’er a babe caressed,

إذاwhenever هوىit dipped راجحاًweighed down منfrom تحتهاbeneath her شالاit rose
A collared dove sang upon one of its boughs;
The vines sing softly from the arbors where
whenever it dipped, weighed down beneath her, it rose again.
A loosened scarf waves in the scented air
سقْياًwatering ورَعْيالهاand care for it منas a سَرْحةٍtree كرمتْwas generous

May rain and care bless it, that generous tree!
Pasture and water here the flocks are blessed
And oh, the bliss of one who rested at noon in its shade!
O paradise beneath these bowers confessed!
