    A warm greeting

    to Arab genius,

    and a reverent gaze

    toward the splendor of literature:

the two have been brought together

by May—may my mother and father be her ransom.

    Before her, genius was

an unborn child in the womb of books.

Ah, how often it treated us

    with rejection and avoidance!

    Before her had been sown

    hopes in a barren valley.

Over the mother of languages passed

ages in which she bore no child,

    until, when she labored

    on her grievous day,

God graciously bestowed the one whom

    you see close at hand.

So she brought glad tidings and gave warning

    through her prose and speeches.

    O shining marvel

that folded away the shadows of deep darkness,

    and a well-guarded pearl,

though you have not been veiled,

    and a shining star

in her East and in the West!

The men have yielded to you

    the lofty station.

    عساكِ لن تخيَّبي

    They have failed in their endeavor;

    may you not be disappointed.

    The governors of literature's affairs

have entrusted you with the kingdom of literature,

and invested you with their authority—

and that is the highest of ranks.

And they swore allegiance to you—a pledge

so hard for the seeker to obtain.

So chaos vanished, and calm prevailed

    in affairs after the turmoil.

And the realm of learning stood

with its bonds and tent-ropes drawn tight.

How great a queen she is!

    How just, and how beloved!

For the allegiance sworn to her was not

    by force and conquest.

O May, what have you seen in

    our lands to admire?

You crossed the breadth of the sea when

you traversed the length of the desert plain.

    May you find rest

    after long weariness.

    But what might you recall

    of strange things?

I do not lie to God, for there is nothing

    in our life worth desiring.

    Indeed, calamities are approaching,

    and hopes are in flight:

    a malignant mass

    that has baffled the physician.

Alas for the man of letters

    and the refined young man,

neglected, like a copy of the Qur'an

now lying in a house of idols.

    So his ill fortune climbs,

    and his good fortune descends.

    His age gazed upon him

    with its frowning face.

    For him alone grew narrow

the bosom of the broadest expanse.

    His day and his night

are spent in sleeplessness and weariness.

So wipe away, O May, some of

    his streaming tears.
