Will you kindly renew our meeting,

or are you still far away from us?

You come to our haunts like a flash

of lightning, wandering as it pierces the ether.

The horizon’s lightning took its radiance from you,

then went its way, while you shone brighter still.

Had it emulated your perfection and fidelity,

it would not have missed its tryst or failed its promise.

We meet you, but like a traveler who passed through an encampment,

then offered greetings while crossing the desert wastes.

And when we are about to utter a word of greeting, there speaks

Farewell to us: “I want a poem.”

    بِبُعدِكَ قَد طَرَحتُ غَميدا

    This farewell—may my Lord give it the draught it gave my heart;

in your absence, I have cast myself down, shrouded.

Stay a while, that we may heal our hearts and gather

the fruits of your kindness, which revive the afflicted.

Be gentle with the hearts of those who love you, for they

have lost, through love for you, their wounded half.

    لازالَ شَخصَكَ بِالجَميلِ فَريدا

    So gather their scattered fragments at the spring of joy;

may you ever remain peerless in kindness.

Our nights danced for joy in your presence,

    as though drunk, trailing banners.

Parting seized their joy and made them wretched,

and I saw them fleeing in fright, fearing a plot.

Hail, O Shami! Truly, for tenderness in

your Damascene grace, you stand alone.

Your noble companions acknowledged your favor, praising you,

while Time itself stood as witness.

We shall never forget the favor you have shown us,

which wreathes our necks with kindness.

Al-Fayha grew fragrant through you, offering to all

a fragrance like your praiseworthy conduct.

May whoever opposes you ever suffer, defeated,

and Khalil, your friend, be triumphant and blessed.
