قَلبيmy heart اِكتَوىwas seared وَتَضَرَّماand burst into flame
Who is this watcher in this sanctuary?
Who is this watcher with piercing eyes
My heart was seared and burst into flame.
My heart is seared and broken
ماnot زالَceased يَرصدhe watches خِطوَتيmy step
حَتّىuntil ظَنَنتُI thought منجماan astrologer
He keeps watching my every step,
He still tracks my every step
until I thought him an astrologer.
I thought him a fortune-teller
فَكَأَنَّماso it is as though ياO صحبتيmy companions
عَنfrom عَينهِhis eye عميَwent blind العَماblindness
So it is as though, O my companions,
As if, my friend, blindness
blindness itself had gone blind to his eye.
Had struck his eyes
وَيَظلُّand he remains كَالبوابِlike the doorkeeper
فيin ذاكَthat المَقامِthe place مخيماencamped
And he remains like a doorkeeper,
He lingers like a doorman
encamped in that place.
In that stance, lying in wait
مثلlike الخَيالِthe phantom مَلازِميmy constant companion
يَنسابُhe glides حَوليaround me كَيفَماhowever
Like a phantom, he is always beside me,
Like a specter, shadowing me
gliding around me every which way.
Flowing around me, wherever I go
فَإِذاso when دَخَلتُI entered مُسلماًoffering a greeting
حَيّيhe greeted وَبشَّand beamed مُسلّماreturning a greeting
So when I enter offering a greeting,
When I enter as a Muslim
he greets me and beams in greeting,
Greeting and announcing my faith
مثلlike الضَبابَةthe mist قابَلَتmet
نوراًa light بَلَيلٍon a night أَظلَماgrew dark
like mist that met
Like fog, he meets
a light on a night grown dark.
Light with darkest night

كَالسَهمlike an arrow فُوّقwas nocked وَاِرتَمىand flew
His glances when we meet
His glances upon meeting
are like an arrow, nocked and loosed.
Like arrows loosed, fly straight
ياO لِلمُصيبةfor the calamity أَنَّهُthat he

Oh, the calamity—that he
Oh what misfortune that
is like Hell in my paradise!
He's like hell in my paradise

And my beloved, because of his wrath,
His anger won't abate
is frightened, wary of a mottled serpent,
My qualms and fears multiply
مثلlike الغَزالةthe gazelle فيin يَدِthe hand
الصَيادِthe hunter حَيثُwhere تَحَكَّماhe held sway
like a gazelle in the hand
Like a gazelle in the grip
of the hunter, where he holds sway.
Of a hunter, completely overpowered

لِلسرِّfor the secret دارturned مُتَرجَماan interpreter
She hides her love, yet her gaze
She hides her love, her gaze
has turned interpreter of the secret.
To secrecy her home confined

Since I compelled it to steal
Since I met him, he steals
glances, it has become a culprit.
The moments, now a criminal
مَنَعَhe withheld الرِضابَthe lips' moisture فَكَيفَso how ليfor me
اَنto لاnot أَذوبَI melt مِنfrom الظَماthirst
He has denied me her lips' moisture—so how can I
He forbade pleasures, so how can I
not melt away from thirst?
Not melt from the pain
وَحَلاand grew sweet الخطابthe speech فَلذَّso became delightful ليto me
سكريmy drunkenness بِهِin it عوضin place of اللَماthe lips' dusky hue
And speech grew sweet, and I relished
And his words are sweet, so for me
my drunkenness in it, instead of dusky lips.
They replace wine's intoxication
فَالعَينُso the eye تَرتَعُgrazes بِالبَهاamid splendor
وَالقَلبُand the heart يَخبطthrashes بِالدَماin blood
So the eye grazes amid splendor,
My eyes indulge in splendor
and the heart thrashes in blood.
My heart pounds with passion

A heart struck by love for her
A heart struck by her love
has fallen like a bird into a snare.
Like a bird ensnared, flung itself

A fair maiden whose beauty was adorned
A cheek adorned by her beauty
with gentleness, as it was delicately embellished.
With charm, wherever it shines

A noble angel on earth,
An angel generous on earth
who has strayed from the paths of heaven.
Lost from the paths of the heavens

فَاِعتَزَّso it grew proud مفتخراًboasting بِماin what
Beauty was ascribed to her very being,
Beauty itself traced to her essence
and grew proud, glorying in that.
So proudly she boast of her graces

O melter of livers in
Melter of hearts and livers
the blazing heat of passion,
In the heat of love, broken

be gentle with your lover, who
Have mercy on your love-sick one
cast off the bridle, enslaved by love.
Who humbly seeks audience

Love's thunderbolt crushed him,
Struck down by bolt of passion
so he came to you to find safety.
To you he comes to surrender

In your radiant face he sees
the beauty of approval, smiling.
The smile of favor, promise

And on your shining brow
he sees hope, reading its signs.
He sees hope budding

Turn your glances away from a youth
Turn your gaze to a lad
who spoke before the arrows:
Who before your arrows, falls mute

Leave the arrowheads for whoever transgresses,
Spare your daggers for he who offends
and grant union to one who surrenders.
And grant union, in grace
