وَاللَهُand by God مثلكِyour like فيin الهَوىlove لَمnot أَلتَقيI have met
The fault is yours, and punishment falls on the wretched one.
The sin is your sin, and vengeance is upon the wretched one
And by God, I have never met your like in love.
By God, I have never met anyone like you in love
أَخلَفتِyou broke مِيعاديmy appointed meeting وَخالَفتِand you defied الهَوىlove
وَلماand when غَضبتِyou became angry عَلىwith الخَليلthe friend الأَصدَقِthe truest
You failed to keep my tryst and defied love;
You missed my rendezvous and went against love
And when you grew angry with the truest friend,
And when you were angry with your most loyal friend
وَأَضَعتِand you squandered حَقيmy due تَدعينyou allege ضَلالَةًerror
فيin مَسلَكيmy conduct مِنwho ليfor me بِحُكمwith a judgment مُحقَقِwell-founded
And squandered my due, alleging error
You denied my rights, claiming to be led astray
In my conduct—who will grant me a sound judgment?
In my desire, who will judge me as right?
كلفيmy ardor جَهَلتِyou did not know وَماand not اِكتَرَثتِyou cared بِفاقَتيabout my need

وَحَسبتِand you thought ذُليmy abasement خِدعَةَthe ruse المُتَمَلِقِof the flatterer
You did not know my ardor and cared nothing for my need,
You blamed me in ignorance and did not care for my poverty
And thought my abasement a flatterer's ruse.
And reckoned my humility to be the flattery of a sycophant
وَحَرَقتِand you burned قَلبيmy heart وَهُوَwhile it حَولَكِaround you حائِمٌcircling
مِثلَlike الفَراشِthe moth يَجنُّit goes mad إِنif لَمnot يَحرِقِit burns
And you burned my heart while it circled around you,
You inflamed my heart while it hovered around you
Like a moth that goes mad if it does not burn.
Like a moth doomed unless it is burned
لَماwhen أَتَيتَكَI came to you خاشِعاًhumbly قابَلَتنيyou met me

When I came to you humbly, you met me
When I came to you humbly, you met me
With anger instead of favor, with a downcast gaze.
With anger instead of pleasure, with a lowered gaze

So I began to prod it with love's spur, so that
So I provoked it with the goads of passion
It might stir, responding to my attachment.
To arouse your inclination for my attachment
عالجَتهُI worked on it لِيهبَّso it might spring up فيin وَثباتِهِits leaps
وَثَباتُهُand its stillness مثلlike القَضاءِthe decree المُطبَقِinescapable
I worked on it, that it might spring into its leaps;
I treated it so it would flare up in its leaps
And its stillness was like an inescapable decree.
And its leaps are like inescapable destiny

Where have you withdrawn with your overflowing tenderness?
Where did your overflowing gentleness disappear?

How is it that I see it bestow no glance,
Why do I see it not exulting in a glance
And see that you have shown no tenderness to the robbed man?
While I see you have despoiled it without mercy?

Did you imprison it to stop its thieving? But it
Commits sins if it does not steal.
Will bear burdens if it does not steal

Or are you busy, your head bowed down
Toward the earth, reviving it with an intent gaze?
To the earth, refreshing it with a penetrating gaze?

Did you observe it closely with a probing eye?

How he managed to return after being torn to pieces?

Moving your eyelids with smooth kohl?

Relieve the heart's anguish before we part
Quench the heart's burning thirst before we part.
