    The East has beamed with joy in you; you are its pillar.

    And humankind was illumined by you; you are its right guidance.

    Are you not the one who revealed this knowledge and intelligence,

    And gave the heights of glory a light, whose blaze shone forth?

    O Jawdah, excellence of the age, through whom bounty came to the people

    From the king of glory, so his lands took pride.

    I see Aleppo the Gray beholding in you, as her own,

    A shooting star whose distinction shone among the radiant stars.

    His trust in your lofty, mighty resolve.

    He sees you in the field of glory—praise is yours—

    The mightiest champion, whose steeds race ahead.

    O sea of knowledge, whose bounty has flooded the universe,

    And O full moon of understanding, whose sound judgment has shed light.

    تَشيَّدَ فيهِ الحَق فَهُوَ عِمادُهُ

    Your reed pen is a sword that annihilates ignorance;

    Truth was built up through it; it is truth’s pillar.

    فَأَيَّ فَتىً ما في يَديكَ قِيادهُ

    You stole people’s hearts with kindness, doing good;

    So what young man’s reins are not in your hands?

    Khalil, Your Excellency’s faraway friend, for the sanctuary

    Yearns, yet the object of his desire has forsaken him.

    He has indeed missed a good fortune you bestowed

    On an abode that flourished when you settled on its bed.

    A sanctuary in Hama embraced you yesterday, exulting;

    Above the Ram on high, its blaze gleams.

    On a day when the Orontes, the rebel, obeyed you submissively,

    And the heart of the Euphrates yearned to see you.

    If indeed good fortune eluded me, and with it my hopes,

    Then one day its time of return must surely come.

    For separation does not change my affection,

    And the defiance of my times will not endure.
