خُطِفَتshe was snatched away مَحجبَةًveiled فَأَينَso where is رَشاديmy good sense
وَمَضَتand she departed مَمنعةًunapproachable فَكَيفَso how fares فُؤاديmy heart
She was snatched away, veiled—where is my good sense?
Veiled, she was seized - so where is my composure?
And she departed, unapproachable—how fares my heart?
She moved on, denying me - how can my heart bear this?
وَسِرتand she journeyed وَماand did not نَظَرتlook لِذُليat my abasement بَعدَهاafter her departure
فَكَأَنَّهاso it was as though she اِنتَصَرَتlent support إِلىto حُساديthose who envy me
And she journeyed on, without a glance at my abasement after her departure,
She left without so much as a glance in my misery's direction -
As though she had sided with those who envy me.
As if she had triumphed over my enviers!
وَغَدَتand she began تَقولsaying لِرَكبِهاto her caravan يَومon the day of النَوىparting
أَترىdo you think الخَليلKhalil يَعيشُwill live بَعدafter بَعاديmy departure
And on the day of parting she began to tell her caravan:
And as her caravan set out at the parting place, she said:
“Do you think Khalil will live after my departure?
"Does my friend live on, now we've parted?"
إِنif عاشَhe lives مَسلوبَbereft of القَرارrepose يَطيبُit pleases ليme

أَبَداًforever سَماعَhearing بُكاthe weeping of هِزارِthe nightingale of الناديthe gathering
If he lives, bereft of repose, it will please me
If he lives bereft of peace, it suits me well
Forever to hear the weeping of the gathering’s nightingale.”
To hear forever the sobbing of the group of friends.
أَناI عائِشٌalive ياO فِتنَتيmy enchantress بِيَدِin the hand of الأَسىsorrow

I live, O my enchantress, in sorrow’s hand;
I live, my torment, in the hands of grief -
I weep and lament; so hear my litany.
I weep and scream, so hear my litany!
أَبَداًforever يَرينيshows me العشقlove هَولthe horror of طرادِpursuit
With thoughts scattered and strength crushed,
My thoughts are scattered, my strength crushed -
Love forever shows me the horror of pursuit.
Love shows me ever the horror of pursuit.
فَكانَّso it is as though عاصِفَةthe tempest of المَحَبةlove وَالنُهىand reason
ريحthe wind of الجُنوبِthe south يَقُلُّbears aloft رَجُلَa swarm of جَرادِlocusts
Thus love’s tempest and my reason are like
The gale of passion and taboo was a wind
The south wind bearing a swarm of locusts.
That hindered the steps of a locust swarm.
ياO أَيُّهاyou القَومpeople الذينwho تَعَمَدواdeliberately sought

O people who deliberately sought
O people who sought and achieved my demise at dawn,
To kill me, and took my reins at daybreak,
You who have seized the reins of my steed!

Why have you not, noble ones, pitied a youth
When you had no mercy, O nobles, upon a healthy youth,
Seeking bounty? Are you not the watering place of those who come to drink?
Were you not the water-drawers of the river bank?
ظَمأنَّthirsty وَافاكُمhe came to you فَرُدَّand was turned away بِحَرقَةِwith the burning of النارthe fire

A thirsty man came to you, but was sent away scorched by the fire
Thirsty, I came to you but with burning fire
You have for slaking the thirsty.
You turned me back, seeking to quench my thirst.
أَغرَيتُمyou incited بَدريmy full moon فَهَبَّso it rose مُخاصِماًin hostility

You incited my full moon, which rose in hostility,
You provoked my full moon, so he turned hostile
Defying my desire, intent on opposing me.
Disobeying my will, stubbornly holding his own.

What have you done? You have stirred up discord
What have you done? You've sparked dissent
Between me and you, and between me and my heart.
Between us, and between me and my heart!
وَأَبَنتُمُand you revealed فيin الحُبِّlove كُلَّevery جَديدَةٍnovelty

And you have revealed in love all manner of novelties—
In love, you've fathomed each new depth -
By God, my forebears never heard of them.
By God, my ancestors never heard of this!

O gazelle of the valley, whose people camp
The gazelles of the shaded valley where they dwell
Among the thickets in the valley’s shade,
Among the beautiful wild beasts in the valley's shade -

The summer heat called you there to quench your thirst,
The heat of summer calls you to quench your thirst,
And within my ribs, yearning strikes sparks from flints.
And with my ribs, a wineskin for fervor.

Restrain your glances from shooting darts at humankind;
Lower your glance from ogling people -
Have mercy on entrails and livers.
Gently, upon lungs and liver!

You set out to hunt the hearts of the throng;
You turn to hunt the hearts of the mullahs -
Why did you not beware the hunter’s ruse?
Why not beware the cunning of the hunter?
أَناI ذَلِكَthat one الغاديsetting out at dawn وَراءَكَbehind you فيin الفَلاthe wilderness

I am that dawn traveler behind you in the wilderness;
I am the one wandering behind you in the meadow -
Where is escape from love that goes forth at dawn?
Where to flee from the perpetual love?

What do you seek through avoidance and coldness?
What do you want with avoidance and disdain -
Show me tenderness, for you—you are my desire.
Have mercy on me, for you are all I desire!
لاnot أَبتَغيI seek غَيرanything but الحَديثconversation وَحَبَذاand how delightful

إِنif جَرَّit brings ليto me تَقبيلkissing ذاكَthat الهاديneck
I seek nothing but conversation—and how delightful
I seek nothing but conversation, if it
If it leads me to kiss that neck!
Should draw for me a kiss from that guide.
