I see the goblets stumble against the bottles,

And wine's spirit toy with the heart.

It arrays its stars as an army defending

A sanctuary where the two Farqad stars have taken their stand.

As though its cups were planted as spears,

Saluting where the two luminaries shone.

And its headiness has circled within minds,

And I am drunk without the wine of the jars.

For lights wreak havoc upon the gaze,

By which eyes are taken captive at the sight.

The full moon veiled itself in heaven when

The two moons appeared in this place:

Glory's two counselors, Darwish, the cherished,

And As'ad Mukhlis, peerless in his age.

A marshal whose troops have gained might through him,

    He spreads over the heights the banner of safety;

And a governor who, for his subjects, has donned

    The noblest mantle of sincerity.

They both poured forth bounty from glory's ether,

Which garlands every neck with pearls,

And forbearance that floods the horizons with kindness,

And tender fellowship that frees every captive,

And resolve that has risen to repel every calamity,

And judgment before which the Yemeni sword falls short.

Behold, O you two luminaries—thanks for what

    These two hands have bestowed.

Khalil, friend of your exalted selves, has become in this world

An interpreter of your noble deeds,

And every day, as a spokesman, gives free rein

To the tongue of gratitude on behalf of the people of the age.
