Take me by the hand; my paths have narrowed around me.

And rescue me from the hands of my calamities.

Bear the hills upon my shoulders.

Has sought fidelity from a treacherous liar.

I stumble through the darkness of devastating affliction.

Do not heap up words of condolence; they are

Like arrows upon a melting heart.

A mourner listening to words of solace

Is like a wounded man gazing at his assailant’s sword.

Rather, support me with weeping, for it

Soothes the heart’s burning anguish amid hardships.

And if I could, I would restrain my tears; indeed,

I seek no relief amid my troubles.

And on it I was robbed of my treasure and my hopes.

O friend, none but the noble one is dear to me.

So lament, and heighten my longing for him, my friend.

Like poison that ravages the drinker’s heart.

Was escape there from the plundering plague.

As grief piled high, standing on every side of me.

As though, beneath the skirts of morning light,

They were darkness’s body, with calamities’ heads upon it.

And as though they had closed over me, till I was nothing

But one buried in the narrow confines of calamities.

O you absent from us, whose memory remains among us,

Throughout all time we find it never absent.

You hastened at the appointed departure, when

The herald’s voice called, and you rose toward the summoner.

You left us—when shall we meet again? And when, oh when,

Will your absence end, though it is an inescapable blow?

They carried you away, not waiting for me a little while

To fulfill the farewell that was your due.

For in the noble land of your birth lies a plot of earth

Where I have now laid most of all I desired.

The chance turns of fate brought you back to its horizon,

And you returned borne along, without steeds.

That took the place of rain from pouring clouds.

Of it, amid an outpouring of mercies and gifts?

O my father, I would ransom you, if ransom could restore you to me.

You have gone from me, dearest protector ever to depart.

Where is the tenderness from which, so often,

    We sipped every sweet draught?

Where is your affection, and where your prayers of blessing,

Those that spread my hopes before me?

Or where are your hands, whose kindness

Graced my neck with a necklace of stars?

O my father, why do you not answer your sons? They have

Cried out to you, and I was the best of answerers.

O my father, why has your eye closed, after

You used to keep vigil, O tender watcher over me?

Did you lower your gaze in pity, lest you see

My afflictions at your grievous death?

Or are you engrossed with your namesake in heaven—

I mean Gabriel, the noblest companion?

Alas, the hope of immortality does not lift

The weight of fetters from the throbbing heart.

The certainty of faith gives the greatest consolation,

Yet human nature resists, swerving from duty.
