Awake from your wine-stupor; do not sleep.

For wine has triumphed over sleep.

Come, let us meet: a drunken woman singing

with a drunkard who goes mad without wine.

And let us sip a cup of revelry's wine,

passed to you from passion's hand.

And let us disrobe in the palace courts, until

we clothe its pinnacles in the robes of love's frenzy.

Stop; do not light the lamp within, for already

you have torn apart the veils of darkness.

Ah, an angry glance for you from your watcher!

Leave him; he is held fast by the bridle.

He bites his pillow in rage, and spends the evening

lowering his gaze in dread of a quarrel.

And what can he do? His hands are powerless

when he sees Khalil in this place.

Remove the necklace; it has no place

on your neck; cast aside the strung pearls.

Take my neck, wound round yours as a collar; and if

you are not content, then take my words.

    Words describing you—what thing

    could surpass them among humankind?

Lift the veil from your tender bosom,

for it has envied your unveiled brow.

Undo the buttons: there is a wave there

from your breasts, confined within a goblet.

You who melt my heart, grant me healing,

for the ordeal of illness has grown severe.

Your seclusion and my endurance have lasted long,

and your stubbornness has kept me from my goal.

I see you, yet see you not, save like a flash of lightning,

so I settle for a greeting instead of union with you.

And I gain nothing beyond a promise.

When has a generous person ever stopped at words?

What is past is past; so end my torment.

Let us now forget our former quarrel.

Time brings grief, then one day brings joy,

and a person weeps after smiling.

Happy is he who stays alert to the nights,

and hastens toward his hopes when opportunity comes.
