بَداappeared فيin العُلىthe heights بَدرfull moon الهُدىof guidance فَأَنارَهُand illumined it
وَتَمَّand grew full فَكانَتso became هالَةhalo السَعدِof good fortune دارَهُits home
The full moon of guidance appeared in the heights and illumined them.
The full moon of guidance rose high, illuminating it,
And it waxed full, and the halo of good fortune became its home.
And it became complete, so it was the halo of good fortune, its house.
وَماand not هالَةٌa halo لَكنbut سَوادَthe darkness عُيونِناof our eyes
بِهِaround him دارَcircled لَماwhen أَحدَقَتthey gathered round فَانارَهُso he illumined it
And it was no halo, but the darkness of our eyes
It's not a halo, but the blackness of our eyes,
That circled him when they gathered round; then he illumined it.
With which its house shone when it stared intently.
فَمَنso whoever شَكَّdoubts فَليَنظُرthen let him look بِوَجهِat the face of خَليلناour Khalil
عُذاراًcheek-down عَلَيهِupon it الأُنسdelight أَلقىcast إِخضِرارَهُits greenness
So whoever doubts, let him behold on our Khalil's face
So whoever doubts, let him look at the face of our friend,
Cheek-down upon which delight has cast its green hue.
Upon whom intimacy sheds a greenish radiance.
فَفيfor in فِكرِهِhis thought الساميlofty لَهيبٌa flame مِنof الذَكاbrilliance
أَبانَrevealed دُخاناًsmoke وَهُوَwhile it يَخفيconceals أَوارَهُits fierce heat
For in his lofty thought burns a flame of brilliance,
In his sublime mind there is a flame of intellect
Which has revealed smoke while concealing its fierce heat.
That showed smoke while hiding its fire.
وَلَوand if لَمnot يَكُنwere صُبحthe dawn الرَجاof hope وَجهَهُhis face لَماthen not

And were his face not the dawn of hope, never
Had the morn of hope not been his face,
Would that little smoke have risen above its sparks there.
That smoke would not have risen in it with sparks.
خَليلٌKhalil بَداappeared يَحييrevives الخَليلَthe friend بِلُطفِهِwith his kindness
جَليلٌa noble man غَداbecame فعلُdoing الجملgoodness (apparently intended: الجميل) شِعارَهُhis watchword
Khalil appeared, reviving his friend with his kindness—
A friend appeared, enlivening the friend with his kindness,
A noble man, whose watchword has become doing good.
Becoming glorious, the deeds of camels his motto.
دَعاهُsummoned him أَثيرether المَجدِof glory لُطفاًgently لِبُرجِهِto its tower
فَلاحَso he shone forth وَأَبدىand displayed لِلعِبادِto humankind وَقارَهُhis dignity
The ether of glory gently summoned him to its tower;
The ether of glory called him kindly to its tower,
So he shone forth and showed humankind his dignity.
So he shone and showed solemnity to the servants.
أَبانَappeared لافقِto the horizon of السَعدِgood fortune كَوكَبُthe star وَجهِهِof his face
مَعاًtogether وَهُوَwhile it يَجليillumines لَيلَهُits night وَنَهارَهُand its day
The star of his face appeared on the horizon of good fortune,
He revealed to the horizon of fortune a star, his face,
Illumining its night and its day together.
Together, as he illuminated its night and day.
وَحييand he offered greetings فَأَحياناso he gave us life فَقُلتُso I said مُؤَرِخاًcomposing a chronogram
خَليلُKhalil الكَمالِof perfection الآنَnow أَبدىhas revealed عذارَهُhis cheek-down
And he offered greetings and gave us life; so I said, composing a chronogram:
He brought me to life, so I said, recording the date,
Khalil of perfection has now revealed his cheek-down.
"The perfection of perfection has now revealed its bloom."
