قُلِّدْتِyou were invested بِالْحَقِّrightfully وَشَاحَsash of الكَمَالْperfection
قُلِّدْتِ بِالْحَقِّ وَشَاحَ الكَمَالْ
ذَاكَthat هُوَit is الرَّمْزُthe symbol وَأَنْتِand you المِثَالْthe embodiment
ذَاكَ هُوَ الرَّمْزُ وَأَنْتِ المِثَالْ
You were rightfully invested with the sash of perfection.
You were endowed with justice and the cloak of perfection
That is the symbol, and you are the embodiment.
That is the symbol and you are the example
فِيin صُورَةٍan image لَمَّاحَةٍradiant شَرَّفَتْhonored
فِي صُورَةٍ لَمَّاحَةٍ شَرَّفَتْ
يَدhand of الْعلَىeminence فِيهَاin it الحِجَىwisdom وَالجَمَالْand beauty
يَد الْعلَى فِيهَا الحِجَى وَالجَمَالْ
In a radiant image, honor was bestowed
In an illustrious image honored
by the hand of eminence upon wisdom and beauty.
By the Most High where veneration and beauty lie
فَارْوقُنَاour Farouk بُورِكَmay he be blessed فِيin عُمْرِهِhis life
فَارْوقُنَا بُورِكَ فِي عُمْرِهِ
دَبَّرَgoverned مُلْكاًa kingdom وَالصِّبَاwhile youth فِيin إِقْتِبَالْits first bloom
دَبَّرَ مُلْكاً وَالصِّبَا فِي إِقْتِبَالْ
Our Farouk—may his life be blessed—
So allow us to savor his blessed life
governed a kingdom while youth was still in its first bloom.
He managed a kingdom as youth was in ascent
وَأَحْكَمَand made sound الرَّأْيَjudgment فَمَاso not حِكْمُهُhis rule
وَأَحْكَمَ الرَّأْيَ فَمَا حِكْمُهُ
إِلاَّbut فِعَالٌdeeds أَعْقَبَتُهَاfollowed them فِعَالْdeeds
إِلاَّ فِعَالٌ أَعْقَبَتُهَا فِعَالْ
And made his judgment sound; his rule is nothing
And had sound judgment so his rule
but deeds followed by deeds.
Was but deeds followed by more deeds
سُبْحَانَglory be to مَنْthe One who أَعْطَاهُgave him تِلْكَthose النَّهَىpowers of reason
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ أَعْطَاهُ تِلْكَ النَّهَى
سُبْحَانَglory be to مَنْthe One who أَعْطَاهُgave him تِلْكَthose الخِصَالْvirtues
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ أَعْطَاهُ تِلْكَ الخِصَالْ
Glory to Him who gave him those powers of reason!
Glory to Him who granted him such calm ways
Glory to Him who gave him those virtues!
Glory to Him who granted him such traits
لاَno بِدْعَwonder أَنْthat تَبْلُغَshould attain فِيin عَهْدِهِhis reign
لاَ بِدْعَ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ فِي عَهْدِهِ
أُمَّتُهُhis nation مَرْتَبَةًa rank لاَnot تُنَالْattainable
أُمَّتُهُ مَرْتَبَةً لاَ تُنَالْ
No wonder that, in his reign, should rise
It's no wonder that during his reign
his nation to a rank beyond reach.
His nation reached a rank beyond all reach
لَمْdid not يَدَّخِرْspare وَسعاًeffort لإِنْهَاضِهَاto uplift it
لَمْ يَدَّخِرْ وَسعاً لإِنْهَاضِهَا
وَحَيثُماand wherever أَلقَىfound (uncertain reading) عِثاراًa stumble أَقَالْremedied
وَحَيثُما أَلقَى عِثاراً أَقَالْ
He spared no effort to raise it up,
He spared no effort to advance it
and wherever he found a stumble [reading uncertain], he remedied it.
And wherever he found weakness he strengthened it
أَلْعَدْلُjustice فِيin تَصْريفِهِhis administration شامَلٌall-embracing
أَلْعَدْلُ فِي تَصْريفِهِ شامَلٌ
وَالفَضْلُand bounty مَبْذَولٌfreely bestowed بِغَيْرِwithout إِبْتِذَالْdebasement
وَالفَضْلُ مَبْذَولٌ بِغَيْرِ إِبْتِذَالْ
Justice is all-embracing in his administration,
Justice in his rule was all encompassing
and bounty is bestowed without debasement.
And favor abounded, given generously not stingily
يُهْنِئْكِmay it gladden you الإنْعَامthe bestowed honor مِنْfrom عَاهِلٍa sovereign
يُهْنِئْكِ الإنْعَام مِنْ عَاهِلٍ
يُقَدِّرُrecognizes بِالإِنْعَامِby granting honors قَدْرَthe worth of الفِعَالْdeeds
يُقَدِّرُ بِالإِنْعَامِ قَدْرَ الفِعَالْ
May the honor bestowed by a sovereign gladden you,
The bounty you enjoy from a ruler
who, through granting honors, recognizes the worth of deeds.
Who values bounty according to deeds done
يَاO كَوْكَبَstar of القُطْبَthe pole وَنُورَand light of الهُدَىguidance
يَا كَوْكَبَ القُطْبَ وَنُورَ الهُدَى
لِقَوْمِهَاfor her people وَالعَصْرُand the age عَصْرُan age of إِنْتِقَالtransition
لِقَوْمِهَا وَالعَصْرُ عَصْرُ إِنْتِقَال
O pole star and light of guidance
O star of the pole and light of guidance
for her people, in an age of transition!
For her people, and an age of transition
أَدْرَكْتِyou attained فِيin المَجْدِglory وَلَمْand did not تَقْصُرِيfall short
أَدْرَكْتِ فِي المَجْدِ وَلَمْ تَقْصُرِي
حَقِيقَةًa reality يَقْصِرُfalls short عَنْهَاof it الخَيَالْimagination
حَقِيقَةً يَقْصِرُ عَنْهَا الخَيَالْ
You have attained in glory, without falling short,
You attained glory beyond all imagining
a reality beyond the reach of imagination.
A reality beyond what dreams portray
أَلْعِلْمُknowledge وَالفَنُّand art وَمَاand what وَلَّدَاthey both brought forth
أَلْعِلْمُ وَالفَنُّ وَمَا وَلَّدَا
قَوَّمْتِyou upheld مِنْهَاamong them كُلَّevery غَالٍprecious thing وَعَالْand lofty thing
قَوَّمْتِ مِنْهَا كُلَّ غَالٍ وَعَالْ
Knowledge and art, and what they have brought forth—
Knowledge and art and all they engendered
you have upheld all that is precious and lofty in them.
You set right all wrongs and problems
وَمَاand what يَفِيدُbenefits النَّاسَpeople يَسَّرْتِهِyou made it accessible
وَمَا يَفِيدُ النَّاسَ يَسَّرْتِهِ
لِرَفْعِto raise شَأْنٍstanding أَوْor لإِصْلاَحِto improve حَالْa condition
لِرَفْعِ شَأْنٍ أَوْ لإِصْلاَحِ حَالْ
And whatever benefits people, you have made accessible,
And what benefits people you facilitated
to raise their standing or improve their condition.
To raise standing or improve a condition
لَمْnot أَرَI saw أَمْضَىmore resolute مِنْكِthan you عَزْماًin resolve وَإِنْeven if
لَمْ أَرَ أَمْضَى مِنْكِ عَزْماً وَإِنْ
عَزَّwas elusive الَّذِيwhat رُمْتِyou sought وَشُقَّand was difficult المَجَالْthe field of action
عَزَّ الَّذِي رُمْتِ وَشُقَّ المَجَالْ
I have seen none keener than you in resolve, even if
I have not seen a resolve as firm as yours
what you sought was elusive and the way difficult.
Though hard your aim and long the course
كَوَاهِلٌshoulders مَحْمُولُهُنْtheir burden الحِلَىadornments
كَوَاهِلٌ مَحْمُولُهُنْ الحِلَى
حَمَلْنَthey bore أَعْبَاءَburdens of الهُمُومِcares الثِّقَالْheavy
حَمَلْنَ أَعْبَاءَ الهُمُومِ الثِّقَالْ
Shoulders whose burden was adornment
Shoulders adorned with jewels
have borne the heavy burdens of care.
Bore burdens of heavy cares
وَأَنْمُلاَتٌand fingertips بِضَّةٌtender تَبْتَنِيbuild
وَأَنْمُلاَتٌ بِضَّةٌ تَبْتَنِي
لِمِصْرَfor Egypt ذُخْراًa treasure وَالمَبَانِيand the buildings جِبَالْmountains
لِمِصْرَ ذُخْراً وَالمَبَانِي جِبَالْ
And tender fingertips are building
Fingers like silver built up
for Egypt a treasure—and the buildings are mountains.
For Egypt wealth and edifices like mountains
مِنْwhoever (uncertain reading) لَيْسَis not مِنْfrom حَوِّيائِهِhis inner self (uncertain) مُنْفَقاًgiving (uncertain reading)
مِنْ لَيْسَ مِنْ حَوِّيائِهِ مُنْفَقاً
فَلَيْسَfor it is not كُلُّall الأمْرِthe matter إِنْفَاقَspending مَالmoney
فَلَيْسَ كُلُّ الأمْرِ إِنْفَاقَ مَال
Whoever does not give of his inner self [reading uncertain]—
One who does not spend from his abundance
for it is not all a matter of spending money.
Does not truly spend his money
تَشْقَيْنَyou endure hardship لِلتَّرْفِيهِto bring relief عَمْنْfor those who شَقَواhave suffered
تَشْقَيْنَ لِلتَّرْفِيهِ عَمْنْ شَقَوا
مَاhow كَانَwere أَحْرَاكِyou were most deserving بِعَيْشِof a life of الدَّلالْpampering
مَا كَانَ أَحْرَاكِ بِعَيْشِ الدَّلالْ
You endure hardship to relieve those who have suffered,
You wrought two joys for entertaining those in misery
How deserving you were of a life of pampering!
What dullness stirs with pampered living
شَتَّىvaried مُبرَّاتُكِyour charitable works تُقْضَىare met بِهَاthrough them
شَتَّى مُبرَّاتُكِ تُقْضَى بِهَا
حَوَائِجُneeds of الحَالِthe present situation وَيُرْعَىand is safeguarded المَالْwealth
حَوَائِجُ الحَالِ وَيُرْعَى المَالْ
Your charitable works are many; through them are met
Your varied acts of charity fulfill
the needs of the present, and wealth is safeguarded,
The needs of the day and sustain possessions
مِمْاfrom what بِهِthrough it يُسْتَثْمَرٌis put to fruitful use العَقْلُthe mind أَوْor
مِمْا بِهِ يُسْتَثْمَرٌ العَقْلُ أَوْ
تُهَيَأُare prepared الأَيْدِيhands لِكَسْبٍfor earning حَلاَلْlawful
تُهَيَأُ الأَيْدِي لِكَسْبٍ حَلاَلْ
by means that put the mind to fruitful use, or
Through prudent use of mind and preparation
hands are prepared to earn a lawful living,
Of hands for lawful earning
أَوْor تُصْلَحُis reformed الأُسْرَةُthe family فِيin وُلْدِهَاits children
أَوْ تُصْلَحُ الأُسْرَةُ فِي وُلْدِهَا
لِيَنْشَأso it may grow النِّشْءُthe rising generation قَوِيمَupright in الخِلاَلْcharacter
لِيَنْشَأ النِّشْءُ قَوِيمَ الخِلاَلْ
or the family is reformed through its children,
Or correcting the family, raising children
so the rising generation grows upright in character.
Of sterling traits and strong standing
صَنَعْتِyou made لِلشَّعْبِfor the people يلبيit responds وَمَاand what
صَنَعْتِ لِلشَّعْبِ يلبي وَمَا
يَدْعُوit calls وَيَقْضِيand fulfills السُّؤَالَthe request قَبْلَbefore السُّؤَالْthe asking
يَدْعُو وَيَقْضِي السُّؤَالَ قَبْلَ السُّؤَالْ
You made for the people [what] responds, and what
You did for the people whatever
calls and fulfills the request before the asking.
They sought, fulfilling needs before requests
فَالشَّعْبُso the people بِالإِجْمَاعِunanimously يُثْنِيgive praise وَإِنْalthough
فَالشَّعْبُ بِالإِجْمَاعِ يُثْنِي وَإِنْ
لَمْdid not يَكْفِهِsuffice for them فِيin الشُّكْرِthanks قَوْلٌa word يُقَالُis spoken
لَمْ يَكْفِهِ فِي الشُّكْرِ قَوْلٌ يُقَالُ
So the people give praise unanimously, though
So the people with one voice praise you
no spoken words have sufficed to express their thanks.
For no words of thanks suffice
يَاO ذَاتَpossessor of قَدْرٍworth كُلُّeveryone مَنْwho فِيin الحِمَىthe realm
يَا ذَاتَ قَدْرٍ كُلُّ مَنْ فِي الحِمَى
يَجُلهُreveres it يَرْعَاكِmay he guard you رَبَّthe Lord of الحَلاَلْwhat is lawful
يَجُلهُ يَرْعَاكِ رَبَّ الحَلاَلْ
O lady whose worth everyone within the realm
O woman of honor all in the protection
reveres—may the Lord of what is lawful watch over you.
Revere you, Lord of Lawful Provision
دُومِيremain عَلَىat رَأْسِthe summit of الرُّقِيَّadvancement الَّذِيwhich
دُومِي عَلَى رَأْسِ الرُّقِيَّ الَّذِي
أَوْتَيْتِيهِyou were granted it وَهْوَand it is بَعِيدُdistant المُنَالْto attain
أَوْتَيْتِيهِ وَهْوَ بَعِيدُ المُنَالْ
Remain at the summit of the advancement that
Ever rise to greater heights
you were granted, though it is difficult to attain.
You attained though once beyond conception
خَالِدَةٌeverlasting فِيin مِصْرَEgypt آثَارُهُits traces
خَالِدَةٌ فِي مِصْرَ آثَارُهُ
نِسَاؤُهَاher women تَحْمِدُهُpraise it وَالرِّجَالْand the men
نِسَاؤُهَا تَحْمِدُهُ وَالرِّجَالْ
Its traces endure forever in Egypt;
Enduring in Egypt's legacy your traces
her women praise it, and her men.
Its women thank you and its men
