You taught us through example and the pen,

And through noble struggle and generosity,

What influence the new woman has in

The many spheres of nations' progress.

You nurtured a people, a people in misery, and became for them

A mother who shielded them from the hardships of orphanhood.

Nor were you spared, by what you were granted

Of bliss, the feeling of pain.

You looked into their today and their tomorrow

With the gaze of a builder holding fast to truth.

And you gave so generously that the masses escaped thereby

    From time's betrayals and calamities.

Virtues that brought you into view from an eminence

Lofty, and kindled a light upon a mountain.

How deserving the East is of seeing a flame

That shone to bring it out of oppression,

And made clear the path for climbing from

The slopes of its heights to the summits.

They polished for the modern woman a mirror

Showing her perfection close at hand.

    And every ringing, resounding utterance

In which you gathered the marvels of wisdom,

    With every cherished maxim

Dear to discerning minds, drawn from pithy, all-embracing speech,

A call that awakens the sleepers, for

Slumber has lasted long, and minds remain in a dream.

And it is time for resolve to be released from

    That stagnation inherited from antiquity.

Our need is a family founded upon

The structures that our age requires,

    Fit to endure, and sound

In its bodies and minds, free from sickness.

A husband mindful, toward her who shares

    His life, of pledges and obligations;

And a wife who safeguards, for herself and him,

    With reason and justice, the holiest sanctities;

And a family whose upbringing receives care,

With no distinction among the children in their shares.

If the sons are not raised by a wise woman,

How can morals and character be sound?

Or if a cultured woman does not safeguard her husband,

He has sought refuge in a ruined corner of the house.

The family is the little nation; if

It rises, then both stand on their feet.

What is a community worth, half of it weary,

And half of it, though existing, as if nonexistent?

Speak of the new woman as much as

You wish, and pay no heed to accusations.

And do not fear that the stumble of one who

Stumbles will obstruct the tide of a sweeping change.

Did Egypt not see, on the day of its uprising,

Amid the enemies' spears and keen swords,

What the free, chaste woman possessed of

    Patience, courage, and resolve;

And how she did not fear death, nor

    Was among those who faltered in peril;

And how, with knowledge aiding her, she rendered

The finest service in defense of the flag?

She who seeks for herself a homeland

Free—would she be content with oppression if wronged?

So do her justice, O people, and you will obtain justice,

And free your judgment from illusion.
