طَلَعْتِyou rose طُلُوعَthe rising of الشَّمسِthe sun بِالنُّورِwith light وَالنَّدَىand dew
فَلاَso never زِلْتِyou cease to be شَمْسَthe sun of البِرِّbenevolence يَاO رَبَّةَlady of النَّدَىbounty
You rose as the sun rises, with light and dew.
You rose like the sun with light and dew,
So may you ever remain the sun of benevolence, O lady of bounty.
And you remained the sun of righteousness, O mistress of dew!
وَقَدْand sometimes تَحْرِمُdeprives الشَّمسُthe sun العُفَاةَthe suppliants شُعَاعَهَاits radiance
وَلَمْand did not تَحْرِميهِمْyou deprive them مِنْكِfrom you فِيin حَالَةa circumstance يَداa hand
And the sun may sometimes deny suppliants its rays,
The sun may deprive the heedless of its rays,
Yet you have never, in any circumstance, withheld your hand from them.
But you did not deprive them of you, no matter the state.

On every face that was dark with sorrow while you were away.
That had faded in your absence.

And I hear from all directions,
Songs of glad tidings that echo within souls.
Songs of glad tidings echoing in souls.

Throughout the length and breadth of the land
Of those who keep their pledge, in absence and in presence,
Are loyalists, absent and present,

Your cherished return to the longing homeland.

The daughters of poetry called to one another, braiding for her
The daughters of verse braided their hair
Whom benefactions immortalize, an everlasting crown.
To immortalize her whom glory immortalizes.
وَذَاكَand that إِذَاif بَاهَىboasts بِتَاجَيهwith his two crowns قَيْصَرٌCaesar

And that crown, should Caesar boast of his two crowns,
And when the Caesar boasts of his two crowns,
Has a splendor brighter and more enduring through time.
They have a luster more splendid and lasting.
أَيُعدَلُcan be equated? بَاقٍsomething enduring صِيْغَwas fashioned مِنْfrom جَوْهَرِthe essence of النُّهَىwisdom

Can something enduring, wrought from the essence of wisdom, be equated
Can some passing earthly trinket
With some perishing dust, even if it is gold?
Compare to the imperishable jewel of virtue?
حَقِيقٌfitting بِوَادِيfor the valley of النِّيلِthe Nile إِبْدَاءُto display سَعْدهits joy

It befits the Nile Valley to display its joy,
It is fitting for the Nile valley to show its joy,
Though what lies within the soul is many times what has appeared.
For what's within surpasses all that's displayed.
فَإِنَّfor indeed الَّتِيshe who يُعْلَىis exalted بِحَقٍّrightfully مَقَامُهَاher station

For she whose station is rightfully exalted
She whose station is rightly exalted,
Is indeed worthy, as supporters and enemies agree.
Deserves the consensus of loyalists and foes.
أَمَاis not? هِيَshe أَرْقَىthe finest of نِسْوَةwomen of الشَّرْقِthe East شِيْمَةًin character

Is she not the finest of the East's women in character
Is she not the noblest of Eastern women,
And nobility, and the highest among them in standing and lineage?
In merit, rank, glory and splendor?

To her highest pinnacle I raised my greeting,
I send my greetings to her lofty aspects,
And its echo has resounded in every heart.
And her return echoes in every heart.

And I believe I have spoken for Egypt and its people,
I speak for Egypt, its people and glory,
And for Egypt's glory, faded and renewed,
Studying and renewing them tirelessly.

And for every sorrowful person, and every destitute person
For every sorrowful and wretched soul,
In Egypt who returned from the princess's door with bounty;
Hope returned at the door of the princess.

For every anguished and fallen woman,
Among those whose fortunes stumbled, to whom she extended a hand;
She extended a helping hand.
وَعَنْand for كُلِّevery خِرِّيجٍgraduate بِعِلْمٍin learning وَصَنْعَةٍand a craft

And for every graduate in learning and a craft,
For every graduate, skilled and learned,
For whom she founded an institute in the arena of beneficence;
She provided a place to excel.
وَعَمَّاand for what أَعَدَّتْshe prepared لِلْيَتِيمِfor the orphan فَثَقَّفتْthen she educated

And for what she prepared for the orphan, whom she then educated;
And for the orphan whom she enriched,
For many an orphan became a leader among humankind.
Many became, through her grace, masters.
أَيَاO آيَةَmarvel of الشَّرْقِthe East الَّتِيwho ضَنَّتwas sparing العُلَىthe heights of glory

O marvel of the East—the heights of glory have never bestowed
O jewel of the East, so noble
Throughout the ages anyone nobler or more glorious than you.
In the finest of ages, most glorious!
دَعَوكِthey called you بِأُمِّas the mother of الْمُحْسِنِينَthe benefactors وَأَنَّهاand indeed it

They called you 'Mother of Benefactors,' and indeed it
They call you mother of benefactors,
Is a truthful title on glory's lips forever.
A true prayer, eternally on lips of glory.
فَأَنْتِfor you لَهُمُto them أُمُّa mother وَأَنْتِand you أَمِيرَةٌa princess

For you are their mother, and you are a princess;
You are their mother, and their princess -
Yes—may the world and its generous souls be your ransom.
Yes, yours are the world and its bounty.
