قَصَصْتَyou recounted عَلَيَّto me مِنْfrom عِبْرِthe lessons of اللَّيَالِيthe nights
قَصَصْتَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ عِبْرِ اللَّيَالِي
غَرَائِبَmarvels لاnot تُدَانِيهَاmatch them الظُّنُونُconjectures
غَرَائِبَ لا تُدَانِيهَا الظُّنُونُ
You recounted to me, from the lessons of the nights,
You told me tales through the nights,
marvels that no conjecture can match.
Of wonders not to be grasped by supposition.
فَمَاso not بَلَغَتْreached شِغَافَthe innermost depths القَلْبِof the heart إِلاَّexcept
فَمَا بَلَغَتْ شِغَافَ القَلْبِ إِلاَّ
وَقَدْand already فَاضَتْoverflowed مِنَfrom الحُزْنِsorrow العُيُونُthe eyes
وَقَدْ فَاضَتْ مِنَ الحُزْنِ العُيُونُ
They reached the heart's innermost depths only when
Yet they did not reach the heart's longing,
the eyes had already overflowed with sorrow.
Except that tears flowed from the eyes.
لَحَىmay curse اللهُGod الَّذِينَthose who بِهِمْin them وَثَقْنَاwe trusted
لَحَى اللهُ الَّذِينَ بِهِمْ وَثَقْنَا
فَأَلْفَيْنَاso we found وَفَيَّهُمُtheir faithful one يَخُونُbetraying
فَأَلْفَيْنَا وَفَيَّهُمُ يَخُونُ
May God curse those in whom we trusted,
May God destroy those whom we trusted,
only to find their faithful one betraying.
We befriended them yet they betray.
تَرَابَطْنَاwe bound ourselves together بِعَهْدٍby a covenant ضَيَّعُوهُthey squandered it
تَرَابَطْنَا بِعَهْدٍ ضَيَّعُوهُ
أَيَنْقَضِيdoes it end? هَكَذَاlike this السَّبَبُthe bond المَتِينُstrong
أَيَنْقَضِي هَكَذَا السَّبَبُ المَتِينُ
We bound ourselves together by a covenant they squandered.
We were bound by a pact they wasted,
Is this how the strong bond ends?
Can a firm rope be thus undone?
لَقَدْindeed بُتْنَاwe spent the night وَنَحْنُwhile we عَلَىin يَقِينٍcertainty
لَقَدْ بُتْنَا وَنَحْنُ عَلَى يَقِينٍ
فَأَصْبَحْنَاthen we awoke وَلَيْسَand there was no لَنَاfor us يَقِينُcertainty
فَأَصْبَحْنَا وَلَيْسَ لَنَا يَقِينُ
Indeed, we went to bed with certainty,
We slept in certainty, yet awoke
then awoke with no certainty left.
Finding our certain faith was gone.
خَلِيلُKhalil قَضَيْتُI spent أَيَّاماًdays شِدَاداًharsh
خَلِيلُ قَضَيْتُ أَيَّاماً شِدَاداً
وَلَمْand not يُمْسُسْكَtouch you فِيهَاduring them مَاanything that يَهِينُdegrades
وَلَمْ يُمْسُسْكَ فِيهَا مَا يَهِينُ
Khalil, I spent days of hardship,
My friend, I’ve spent such arduous days
and nothing degrading touched you during them.
Yet nothing could bring you disgrace.
لَقَدْindeed شَفَعَتْinterceded بِكَfor you الحَسَنَاتُgood deeds فِيهَاduring them
لَقَدْ شَفَعَتْ بِكَ الحَسَنَاتُ فِيهَا
فَشَفَّعَهَاso accepted their intercession لَكَfor you اللهُGod المُعِينُthe Helper
فَشَفَّعَهَا لَكَ اللهُ المُعِينُ
Indeed, good deeds interceded for you during them,
Good deeds interceded for you,
so God, the Helper, accepted their intercession for you.
So God, the Helper, interceded for you.
أَرَيْتَyou showed القَوْمَthe people كَيْفَhow الحَقُّtruth يَعْلُوrises high
أَرَيْتَ القَوْمَ كَيْفَ الحَقُّ يَعْلُو
وَكَيْفَand how نِهَتيَةُthe end البَاغِيof the oppressor تَكُونُwill be
وَكَيْفَ نِهَتيَةُ البَاغِي تَكُونُ
You showed the people how truth rises high,
You saw how truth prevails,
and what the oppressor's end will be.
And the end of the aggressor comes to pass.
