لِلهِto God دَرُّكَyour excellence منas one بَعِيدٍdistant دَانِnear
You pass on, and your memory fills every heart.
You pass by, and memories of you fill every garden
God be praised for your worth, distant yet near!
Blessed by God, your light shines from afar
أصْبَحْتَyou have become فِيin خُلْدَيْنِtwo eternities لاَnot فِيin وَاحِدِone

You now dwell in two eternities, not in one.
You have become immortal, not just in one paradise
And you shed the crimson one of your two robes.
Casting off your robe of anything less than perfection
أيْO مُصْطَفَىMustafa مَاwhat لِلْوفُودِwith the visitors تَبَدَّلُواthey exchanged

O Mustafa, why have the visitors exchanged
O Most Noble Messenger, why have the delegates changed?
The delights of your hospitality for sorrows?
From your sweet sanctuary to sorrow and mourning
وَفَدُواthey came as visitors لآخِرِfor the last مَرَّةٍtime فَتَزَوَّدُواso they took provisions

They came a final time, so prepare yourselves
Sorrow; and the guests' abode lay deserted.
With sorrow - the guests' abode is gone

Fate has carried off a virtuous man;
Fate has taken the virtuous one
His like appear at widely separated times.
The likes of him come only rarely over time
عَطِلَتْlay unworn حُلًىornaments غَرَّاءُradiant منfrom أخْلاَقِهِhis virtues

Radiant ornaments of his virtues now lie unworn,
Finery of noble character has been stilled in him
Which once, in him, outshone crowns.
It adorned heads with crowns

Who after him will relieve the poor man when he complains,
After him, who will care for the poor when they complain
And show compassion to the weak when they complain of injustice?
And the weak when they are wronged, drawing near

Who can bring the orphans the generous father of bounty?
For the orphans, who will be like the generous father
This morning they have become orphans twice over.
They awoke in the morning, orphaned by his loss

Who will aid the noble if humiliation strikes them?
Who lifted the honoured when humiliation befell them
The Merciful's hand stretched out his hand to them.
Extending to them the hand of the Merciful

They were stricken by his slumber; never before had it
They were distraught at his passing, and never before
Kept him long from goodness and benevolence.
Had good and kindness ceased for so long

A dear soul has come to the Protector
Upright in intention, with sleeves unstained.

He lived life without envy
For his blessings on any day, and none to hate him.
Never once jealous of blessings or critical of others

Clear of mind and noble, intent on what
Quintessence of good advice and freedom to choose
The wits of the astute and the resolve of the brave seek.
Wise of mind and brave of heart

And integrity, piety, and an open hand.
Righteousness, probity, piety and openhandedness

A lifetime, only for its builder to depart when it was complete?
Then when complete, the builder was seen

The more enduring of your two edifices, the one you made your home
You left your lasting legacy built on
In God, through kindness and through faith,
God, virtue and faith
