    وَدَرِيئَةٌ ذُخِرَتْ لَهذَا الآنِ

    You pass away, though you are cherished by the homelands;

a shield held in reserve for this very hour.

This is the gravest calamity, and this

is the sorrowful nation's loss most deserving of grief.

Forgive the bereaved mother if she turns away,

for the one she has lost was her dearest son.

She once wore a necklace of stars,

bright stars whose setting was adorned by two moons.

    قَمَرٌ فَكَانَ عَزَاؤُهَا فِي الثَّانِي

    Then the stars scattered from it, and one moon disappeared;

she found her consolation in the second.

But when he too fell, his loss renewed

her sorrows and put an end to consolation.

Come, let us return to recount the efforts that raised

for glory a monument of towering construction.

In recounting them is a lesson that grows richer

with repetition, though it fills every heart already.

I bring those efforts before me, and my heart hears

a reproach repeated without a tongue:

Those hopes were bought with your scattered blood

and given souls and bodies as their bridal price.

Was it for a condition like the one you have reached,

my people, through division and abandonment?

Who will restore to the country and its people

the age of harmony and the strength of faith?

Its leaders stood together, and its young

were their soldiers, willing and obedient.

Proud deeds clothed life in freshness,

while the earth was watered with deep red blood.

Whether released or bound, whether granted safety

or driven into exile, their two conditions were alike.

The roars of threats in their ears

were like pleasing strains of music.

Even the women, though it had not been their custom

to plunge into danger alongside the men,

came out into the squares, unhindered

by modesty; what place has modest reserve in a house of humiliation?

The gatherers of roses sought their share

    wherever the aggressor's bullets flew.

How beautiful she was, her daughters stained

with the wounds of the brave whom they tended!

In that great time, made great by what happened

within it, a time rarely seen among the ages,

the tyrants tasted the bitterness of the draught

they had prepared; bitter indeed was tyranny's law.

They saw the danger of obstinate opposition and softened

their harsh exercise of force and power.

They approached the leaders of Egypt as

the peers of one kingdom approach their peers.

What did they find in Adli's grace, in

his measured judgment, and in his steadfast heart?

They debated one another, and debate brings guidance

when intentions are cleansed of stains.

    Adli went and returned, striving

ably and confidently toward his goals.

whether he held back at one moment or drew near at another.

If a bond broke, he joined it; if

an error arose, he warded it off with decisive proof.

His radiant faith was a fixed star

at the pole while the heavens turned.

    Opinions became confused, except wherever

its light appeared to a bewildered eye.

He kept resisting those who seized his homelands

until God granted the homelands victory.

As for his inward character and outward conduct, they

never differed in private and in public.

His companions never saw Adli, even when

formality was set aside among friends,

nor was he ever seen in a solemn setting

speaking as a drunken man speaks.

    كَلاَّ وَلَمْ تَفْتِنْهُ بِنْتُ دِنَانِ

    Nor did a wanton woman preoccupy him;

nor did the daughter of wine jars tempt him.

As for his qualities, their fragrance bore

a trace of kinship with those who wear crowns.

in a gifted person, whether plainly dressed or adorned.

the meanings of nobility had reached completion.

He offered his smile in due measure: he was

neither lavish with it nor miserly.

    Smiles on faces have many

    degrees, and carry subtle meanings.

The warmth one gives from one's own soul

differs from the warmth of a gift from the hand.

His qualities were complete and pure; they were

mixed with no trace of deficiency.

that might diminish its lofty standing.

Gentleness was evident, and pride embodied

    in his elegant, unhurried person.

Forbearance was in him a kingly trait,

    above aversion, rancor, and aggression.

Whoever forgives a fault in enemy and friend alike

has reached the utmost height of kindness.

May God Most High make his reward abundant

and settle him in everlasting gardens.
