حَظَيْتyou have been blessed بملءِwith the fullness of الْعَيْنthe eye حُسْناًin beauty وَرَوْعَةًand splendor
عَرُوسٌa bride كَبَعْضlike one of الْحَورthe houris جَادَbestowed generously بهَاwith her الْخُلْدُParadise
You have been blessed with beauty and splendor that fill the eye—
I am blessed with beauty and radiance to the fullness of sight
A bride like one of the houris, bestowed by Paradise.
A bride like some of the houri, granted to her is eternity
يَوَدُّwishes بَهَاءُthe splendor of الصُّبْحdawn لَوْif only أَنَّهُthat it لَهَاfor her
مُحَيّاًa face وَغُرُّand the radiant الزَّهْرblossoms لَوْif only أَنَّهَاthat they عقْدُa necklace
The splendor of dawn wishes it were her
The brilliance of dawn wishes it could be for her
face, and radiant blossoms wish they were her necklace.
A morning glow, and the bud of the flower wishes it could be her necklace
فَإِنْso if خَطَرَتْshe walks gracefully فِيin الرّائعَاتthe splendid pieces منَof الْحُلَىadornment
تَمَنَّتْlonged for حُلاَهَاher ornaments الرَّوْضُthe gardens وَالأَغْصُنُand the boughs الْمُلْدُthe supple
For if she walks gracefully in splendid adornments,
So if she crossed the mind of the beauties among the adorned
The gardens and supple boughs would covet her ornaments.
The garden and the tender branches wished for her adornment
كَفَاهَاspared her تَجَاريبَthe trials of الْحَدَاثَةِyouth رُشْدُهَاher good judgment
وَقَدْand already جَازَhad passed through رَيْعَانُthe prime of الصَّبَاyouth قَبْلَهَاbefore her الرِّشْدُwisdom
Her good judgment has spared her the trials of youth,
Her judiciousness has sufficed her the experiences of novelty
And wisdom had already passed through youth’s prime before her.
And the prime of youth had passed before her maturity
وَلَوْand even if لَمْnot يَكُنْwere مَهْراًa dower لَهَاfor her غَيْرُother than عَقْلهَاher mind
لَكَانَit would be الغِنَىwealth لاَnot الْمالُproperty يُقْنَىis amassed وَلاَnor النَّقْدُcash
And even if her mind were her only dower,
If her dowry were none but her intellect
It would be wealth—not amassed property, nor cash.
Sufficiency, not wealth or coinage, would be sought
غنىًwealth لاَnot يَحُلُّis permissible الزُّهْدُrenunciation فيهِof it لِفاضلٍfor a virtuous man
حَصيفٌdiscerning إِذَاwhen فيin غَيْرهwhat is other than it حَسُنَis good الزَّهْدُrenunciation
Wealth no virtuous man may rightly renounce—
A wealth piety does not befit one of merit
a discerning man—even when renouncing other wealth is good.
When asceticism befits others, it is good
لِيَهْنئكُمَاmay it bring you both joy هَذَاthis القرانُunion فَإِنَّهُfor it is
سُرُورٌjoy بمَاin what نَلْقىwe encounter وَبُشْرَىand glad tidings بمَاof what بَعْدُcomes afterward
May this union bring you both joy, for it is
May this betrothal bring you bliss, for verily it is
Joy in what we encounter, and glad tidings of what follows.
Joy in what we have found, and good tidings in what is to come
ففيfor on يَوْمِهِits day رَقَّتْgrew gentle وَرَاقَتْand grew clear سَمَاؤُهُits sky
لِمَنْfor whoever يُجْتَلَىis unveiled وَانْزَاحَتand dispersed السُّحُبُthe clouds الرَّبْدُthe ashen
For on its day, its sky grew gentle and clear
On its day, its sky softened and relaxed
For those to whom it is unveiled, and the ashen clouds dispersed.
For the one adorned, and the heavy clouds dispersed
وَفيand in غَدِهِits morrow سِلْمٌpeace تَقُرُّfind rest بهِin it النُّهَىthe minds
وَحِلْمٌand forbearance تَصَافىbecome reconciled عنْدَهُin its presence الأَنْفُسُthe souls اللِّدthe contentious
And in its morrow, peace in which minds find rest,
And on the morrow, it is peace souls settle into
And forbearance, in whose presence contentious souls are reconciled.
And forbearance purified of impassioned souls
هُنَاكَthere تَجِدُّrenews الأَرْضُthe earth حلْيَthe jewels of رياضِهاits gardens
وَيُثْنَىand is turned back إِلَىto أَوْقَاتِهِits times البَرْقُlightning وَالرَّعْدُand thunder
There the earth renews the jewels of its gardens,
There the earth enhances the adornment of its meadows
And lightning and thunder are turned back to their seasons.
And lightning and thunder give way to its times
فَلاَso no حَشْدُgathering إِلاَّexcept مَاwhen تَلاَقَىmeet one another أَحبَّةٌloved ones
وَلاَand no شَجْوُsorrow إِلاَّexcept مَاwhat شَجَاstirred sorrow طَائرٌa bird يَشْدُوsings
So there is no gathering except when loved ones meet,
No throng but what beloved ones have met
And no sorrow save what a singing bird stirs.
No lament but what a soaring bird chants
