أَبْدَعْتَyou excelled فِيin دِيوَانِcollection of verse شِعْرِكْyour poetry
أَبْدَعْتَ فِي دِيوَانِ شِعْرِكْ
فَجَعَلْتَهُso you made it مِرْآةَa mirror عَصْرِكْyour age
فَجَعَلْتَهُ مِرْآةَ عَصْرِكْ
You excelled in your volume of verse,
You excelled in your book of poetry
So you made it a mirror of your age.
Making it a mirror of your time
وََكَفىand sufficed لِذَلِكَfor that مَاwhat جَلاَrevealed
وََكَفى لِذَلِكَ مَا جَلاَ
لِلنّاسِto the people مِنْfrom مِرْآةِthe mirror of عُمْرِكْyour life
لِلنّاسِ مِنْ مِرْآةِ عُمْرِكْ
And for that, what was revealed sufficed
And it was enough for that what appeared
To people from the mirror of your life.
To people from the mirror of your life
هَلْis ...? أَمْرُthe condition of هَذَاthis النَّاسِthe people إِنْif
هَلْ أَمْرُ هَذَا النَّاسِ إِنْ
حَقَّقتَyou examine closely إِلاَّanything but عَيْنُthe very same as أَمْرِكْyour condition
حَقَّقتَ إِلاَّ عَيْنُ أَمْرِكْ
Is the condition of these people, if
Is the matter of these people, if
You examine it, anything but your very own?
You realized it except the essence of your matter
تَتَشَاكَلُresemble one another النَّزَعَاتُthe inclinations فِيin
تَتَشَاكَلُ النَّزَعَاتُ فِي
الدُّنْيَاthe world وَيَخْتَلِفُand differs المُحَرِّكْthe driving force
الدُّنْيَا وَيَخْتَلِفُ المُحَرِّكْ
Inclinations resemble one another in
Perspectives in the world conflict
The world, while the driving force differs.
And what moves them differs
وَمَعَand with الإِجَادَةٍmastery جِدَّةٌfreshness
وَمَعَ الإِجَادَةٍ جِدَّةٌ
إِنْif تَأْتِit comes مِنْfrom تَمْثِيلِexpression of فِكْرِكْyour thought
إِنْ تَأْتِ مِنْ تَمْثِيلِ فِكْرِكْ
And with mastery comes freshness,
And with eloquence a renewal
If it springs from expressing your thought.
If it comes from portraying your thought
يَاoh! لُطْفَthe delicacy of مَاwhat أَوْدَعْتَyou placed فِيin الthe
يَا لُطْفَ مَا أَوْدَعْتَ فِي ال
أَلْفَاظِwords مِنْof نفَثاتِbreaths سِحْرِكْyour magic
أَلْفَاظِ مِنْ نفَثاتِ سِحْرِكْ
How exquisite what you have placed in the
O gentleness of what you placed in
Words—breaths of your magic!
Words of the outpourings of your sorcery
وَكَشَفْتَand you unveiled مِنْsome of تِلكَthose المَعَاthe meanings (first part)
وَكَشَفْتَ مِنْ تِلكَ المَعَا
نِيcompletion of 'meanings' الغُرِّthe radiant فِيin لَمِّاحِthe gleam of دُرِّكْyour pearls
نِي الغُرِّ فِي لَمِّاحِ دُرِّكْ
And you unveiled some of those meanings,
And you uncovered from those meanings
Radiant, in the gleam of your pearls.
The secrets in the flashes of your pearls
كَمْhow often ضَاقَproved too narrow بَحْرٌa sea لاَnot يُحَدُّis bounded
كَمْ ضَاقَ بَحْرٌ لاَ يُحَدُّ
بِمَاfor what احْتَوَتُهُcontained it حُدُودُthe bounds of بَحْرِكْyour sea (also your poetic meter)
بِمَا احْتَوَتُهُ حُدُودُ بَحْرِكْ
How often a boundless sea proved too narrow
How narrow is a sea that cannot be limited
For what the bounds of your sea contained!
By what your boundaries of your sea contained
أَدَبٌliterature هُوَit is العُنْوَانُthe hallmark فِيamong
أَدَبٌ هُوَ العُنْوَانُ فِي
المَأْثُورِwhat is handed down مِنْof آدَابِliterary works of دَهْرِكْyour age
المَأْثُورِ مِنْ آدَابِ دَهْرِكْ
Literature that is the hallmark among
Literature is the title in
The literary works handed down from your age.
The oral history of the morals of your time
آيَاتُthe marvels of نَظْمِكَyour verse أَحْكَمَتْperfected
آيَاتُ نَظْمِكَ أَحْكَمَتْ
تَفْصِيلَهَاtheir exposition آيَاتُthe marvels of نَثْرِكْyour prose
تَفْصِيلَهَا آيَاتُ نَثْرِكْ
The marvels of your verse were perfected
The verses of your prose perfected
In their exposition by the marvels of your prose.
Its detailed composition, the verses of your writing
عِشْlive مَاas long as تَشَاءُyou wish مُوَفَّقاًgranted success
عِشْ مَا تَشَاءُ مُوَفَّقاً
وَمُهَنَّأand congratulated بِخُلُودon the immortality of ذكرَكْyour renown
وَمُهَنَّأ بِخُلُود ذكرَكْ
Live as long as you wish, blessed with success,
Live as long as you wish successful
And congratulated on your undying renown.
And congratulated for the eternity of your fame
