Where have you resolved to journey, away from your haven?

I greatly fear even the slightest separation.

O my beloved, are you departing, and so prolonging

a time that was short when we were together?

We counted, by nothing but the sweetness of the

hours, its days and months of happiness.

Is this how the string is severed from

the necklace, and its pearls flung apart?

Set yourself at ease, O beauty of my life.

Can we defy what has been decreed?

No event could veil my gaze

from its desire and have me accept it contentedly,

except this one, whose summons I have answered,

and which rose, a commander, beyond defiance.

What, I wonder, is that which parts the

soul from the body, intent on doing harm—

    لاَ وَاتِراً وَلاَ مَوتُورَا

    that defiant oppressor who kills

    those who have neither shed blood nor been bereaved by it;

who parts the twins by force, though they were

    at peace, suckling joy?

Do not blame me; many a hidden thing, once

revealed, makes its reproacher willing to excuse it.

I go forth defending my homeland,

warding off the invading enemy from it.

Is it honorable, when she has called me, that I

should prefer staying and a soft bed?

Encourage me to part from my bliss,

and make my fretful heart patient.

Address your faithful husband and say:

I love my lion, unbowed and fierce.

Indeed, if I return, then every hardship

will be repaid a thousandfold in joy.

And if I do not return, let it console you that I

did not live ingloriously, and died a great man.

O my beloved, O my lord, O my king,

O my companion, O my broken heart,

O my friend, O my father, O my brother,

O my child, O my cherished half,

Indeed, the orphaning of homelands surpasses the bereavement

of bereaved mothers in pain, and is a dreadful evil.

Go; I have entrusted my affairs to the Guardian.

Go; I ask Him alone to order affairs.

Go, fight, and shed without sin

the aggressor's blood—blood that is forfeit.

Only beware of Death, and do not forget

a bride jealous of Death's claim upon you.

Take my heart and make it your shield; let it ward off

from you the foes' far-spreading evil.

And if it does not keep the shrapnel from you,

then let it be broken before you are wounded.
