Or at the sun's decline, with two sunsets at once,

Or at dusk, setting together,

for the sun, in the world and in a secluded chamber?

For sun and soul, here and beyond?

أم في الظلام فزاده حلكا

سر رقيت به إلى سر

سر رقيت به إلى سر

Or in the darkness, whose blackness was deepened

Or in the dark did it grow darker,

by a mystery through which you ascended to another mystery?

A secret I rose in, to secret?

أم في تجلي البدر ممتزجا

منك انسجى بكآبة البدر

Or when the full moon shone, mingling

Or in the moonshine blended with you

with something of you, and lay shrouded in the full moon's melancholy?

Sadness of moon made of you?

إني جزعت على صباك وهل

I grieved for your youth—and can

guilt, to a cruel one without excuse.

So you spent a while in torment, and did not

So you lived a while tormented, not

know why; and you died without knowing.

Knowing why, and you died not knowing

You were not granted time enough for us to see a trace

Why you never lingered long enough

of yours arising from the rays of dazzling thought.

For rays of splendid mind to shine,

You were not granted time enough for us to see a deed

Long enough for deeds of grace and good

of yours, a fruit of virtue and goodness.

To form a product and design.

You were not granted time enough for us to see a child

Long enough to leave behind a child

of yours, to be relied upon in weal and woe.

To be hoped for, for bane and boon.

فلأي معنى جئت من عدم

ولأي معنى بت في القبر

Then for what purpose did you come from nothingness,

Why did you come from nothingness?

and for what purpose did you come to lie in the grave?

Why did you linger in the tomb?

فلئن ذهبت وما تركت لنا

So if you have gone and left us nothing

If you went and left behind but sadness

but sorrow and the bitterness of remembrance,

And the bitterness of memory,

فليسل أمك أن روحك في

دار النعيم وجنة البشر

دار النعيم وجنة البشر

then let it console your mother that your soul is in

Tell your mother that your spirit lives

the abode of bliss and the garden of joy.

In blissful gardens of eternity.
