Two children, close-knit like two brothers,

They grew up, and both hearts grew in love.

Playfully teasing each other, as though their two souls

Were one soul with two separate forms.

They share life, whether it is pleasant or

Harsh, as the two eyes share it.

    ثُمَّ انْقَضَتْ وَتَفَارَقَ الخِلاَّنِ

    They remained in this closeness for a little while;

Then that time passed, and the two friends parted.

    فَسَطَا النَّوَى وَتَشَتَّتَ الإِلفَانِ

    She was his companion, and he was hers;

Then separation struck, and the two companions were scattered.

They agonized over this parting, until no longer

Did those two youths find pleasure in anything.

Soon love's anguish matured their minds,

And they learned to think before their time.

So they corresponded, though they could not write,

Through remembrance, the messenger of every heart.

And they lamented, each to their own sorrows,

In a lament most revealing of the sufferer's faithfulness.

And they surrendered, each to their hopes

Of nearness after estrangement had tossed them far apart.

But separation lasted long, and they were distracted

From painful remembrance by life's events.

So they were placed in two schools, to grow

Within them in refinement and knowledge,

And to forget that old love

In the company of age-mates and peers.

So they learned correct speech and were trained

To write letters, both at the same time.

Until, when they traced words, there flowed, as though

They had agreed, two words from their pens:

Empty of meaning, yet within their hearts

    They held meanings—life's dearest hopes.

They gathered all eloquence into two names that had

Been written without beauty or skill.

    وَإِلَيْكَ مَا عَنيَا بِبَعْضِ بَيَانِ

    The boy wrote Salma, and she wrote Yusuf;

And here, with a little explanation, is what they meant.

The boy said: “O you whose name grew lovely to me,

I traced it while my two hands trembled.

I pictured it, as though her image had appeared

Within it; I see her beyond it, and she sees me.

And I worshipped its letters, like a symbol veiling

An idol beheld by an idol-worshipper.

But it saddened me that the page lay still, embracing it,

While the yearning heart in my breast throbbed ceaselessly.

And my pen made me jealous, squeaking as it kissed

Those letters with its ringing lips.

So I shattered its two halves, imagining that what

I punished was a pair of sinful lips.

Salma—how sweet her name, and its letters,

Linked together like necklaces of pure gold!

    Intertwined, they suckle throughout time

The water of life together, contented.

And if they were parted, they would become sorrowful,

As orphanhood weans children from their nurse.

O letters, do you know what

    Immense kindness you have bestowed?

If I were one of you, I would never cease to be blessed

    Forever with the sweetest meeting and union;

Nor would I have become, in separation, as I seem,

A soul about to part from the body.

Separation has lasted long, Salma, my desire; does

The time of distance herald our drawing near?

You still fill my eyes and my thoughts,

But my two lips are desolate.

Oh, would that we were children still, just as

We were, until the remotest reaches of time!

They said: ‘For one like you, schools offer solace.’

They lied! Can one who hates forgetting forget?

A burning ache is in me, hidden from them, as

    Ash conceals blazing fires.

Salma—all knowledge in a single word,

Like perfume, whose drop is the essence of gardens.

Salma is life; what is everlasting bliss,

Bartered for seconds when she draws near?

I shall strive in my pursuit, and through it bring nearer

    A time when my reins will be in my own hands;

Then I shall fly to you, impelled by passion and longing,

And quench the burning thirst of my parched heart.”

She said, having traced his name upon the page:

“O you to whose love I have devoted my soul,

And my abasement for you and my yearning grew sweet to me,

Until it seemed I had fallen in love with my abasement.

Let this be a sacrifice for you, companion of my childhood:

That for your sake I have become a companion of sorrows,

And have come to savor your beauty in your absence

From letters I adorned with my fingertips.

I adorned them, as though I were copying them

From an image drawn within my heart.

I inked them black, while their letters in my heart

Are fiery, written in deepest crimson.

My relatives seek future happiness for me

Through learning, yet it is my second misery.

Should youth's season be wasted on anything but love,

When life after youth is fleeting?

Is it to deepen our certainty of our error

And our ignorance that we spend our dearest time?

Leave the bird's path free, to frolic happily

    In its sky and roam everywhere;

And let it surely join its mate, and let them be happy

For a while, just before they come to know sorrow.”

This is but a little of meanings that surpassed

A person's capacity, yet two names contained them.

And often the eloquence of humankind falls short

Of the wisdom two children set down.
