Today is the feast of the wretched, the suffering,

And today is the feast of those at ease, enjoying plenty.

Two feasts—we do not know which joy is greater:

The almsgiver's delight, or the destitute one's happiness.

People's fortunes have been apportioned, yet

No fortune in this world equals the benefactor's.

Blessed are you, Sam'an! Among acts of generosity are

Those no appraiser's reckoning can put a value on.

Blessed are you, son of Salim! Be happy and rejoice

In your splendid fortune in life, and remain well.

Half a century ago, a band of honored men resolved

To found this institution among their people,

    Certain that charity cannot attain

Its aims if it is unorganized.

How fine is charity when it is directed

To its proper end under the guidance of sound judgment.

They followed the straight path, and among

The paths of noble conduct there is none straighter.

They volunteered, giving freely of their wealth

And of their time, out of nobility and sheer generosity.

One whom the Lord has granted ample sustenance—

Would he begrudge a dinar or a dirham?

God, what they encountered at the outset,

From every disgruntled man turning his face away,

And a scheming would-be philosopher, and a rival,

Acting unjustly, and a domineering procrastinator.

    They persevered; no arduous undertaking

Held toil like that of the task they had undertaken.

Taking upon themselves the most painful of tasks

For their souls, yet their souls never wearied.

Their appeal spread, and their call was met

With a response; the credit belongs to the pioneer.

And steadfastness raised its edifice until it became,

In its grandeur, the hesitant one's aspiration.

Leaders succeed one another, as do those who follow

Their footsteps along the path laid out,

    United in a charitable band,

The chairman's pride in it is like the member's.

It brought together, alongside people of zeal and generosity,

People of discernment and unanswerable speech.

Including one who set aside an endowment that provided a refuge,

    And a dwelling for the aid-seeker and the shelter-seeker;

And one contributing to charity, paying his full share,

    Who shoots arrows at misery's excuses;

And noble efforts drawn upon as aid

    For an abandoned orphan girl or a woman without a husband;

And praiseworthy defense of noble people touched by

The cruelty of time, blameworthy toward the noble.

They kept up their struggle, their resolve

    Unflagging, and their course a course of progress;

Countering the assaults of the world with

The soundest, firmest judgment they were given.

Thus, through what they did, a need was met

In every emergency, for everyone who sought them out.

They built, with the means at their disposal, a clinic

To heal the sick and cure the wounded.

And they cared for the spread of learning in an age that had become

A war against anyone without education.

And they guarded honor lest it be assailed

By the ills of an age suspect in its aims.

Their worthy deeds are many; were I to detail them,

The tale would grow long, and the account remain incomplete.

And if I were to count those who benefited from them,

The pen's point would recoil from the numbers.

And if I were to count those for whom they gave,

I would list all that the alphabet's letters could encompass.

But their names are in our hearts,

Their memory courses through them like blood.

No thanks can ever do justice to one who gives openly

Among them, for his gifts—or to one who gives in secret.

Virtue is the loftiest aim when concealed,

And virtue the most splendid example when known.

    O gathering, you whose features

Reveal the gleam of gladness to the discerning observer,

Is there among festivals anything like what you feel

In your souls of the joys of this festival?

It is grandeur enough for your gathering that one sees

Kyrillos within it, in the loftiest place.

How great is this chosen patriarch—

A revered lord of exalted dignity!

Builder of the new, to the extent that

A man's effort allows, and restorer of what has crumbled.

He embodied eloquence in his virtues, and

Left the echo to the speaker's eloquence.

May his Creator bless him, and bless a chosen company

Among whom he is like the full moon among the stars.

Religion and the world have lent them radiance

That has never shone in a gathering more august and noble.

Honor to you, Habib, and to those who followed your course,

Those who came later in time and those who came before.

In God's mercy are those who went before; theirs is

Eden; whoever has mercy on a poor man shall be shown mercy.

And those who remain are in His keeping; may they gain more blessings,

One after another, for the blessings they have given before.

As for the close, its musk is a wish

We repeat forever, and it grows sweet in the mouth:

O Egypt, home of magnanimity and generosity,

Endure, be mighty among the kingdoms, and grow great!

May your noble people live and gain

The fullest bounty from the good things of life.
