To our teacher, the venerable luminary,

Go forth, O greetings from a friend,

Perfumed—and a waft of fragrance suffices you—

From gardens watered with the Nile's honey.

For the effect of kindness, despite distance,

Is not far from one who acknowledges kindness.

The regions of Egypt are filled with witnesses,

Upright men who attest to the master's worth,

From among those educated at his hands,

    Great in character and intellect.

They have furnished, in towns and countryside,

The strongest proof of his beneficence.

O builder of glories from branches

With which you built men from roots:

If I have not learned a word by hearing,

Yet the influence of what was said has not escaped me.

    فَمَا عَدِّي مُرِيداً بِالْقَلِيلِ

    And if you permit, count me as a disciple;

For counting me a disciple is no small thing.

And is there anyone in the Arab world who has not

Received a share of that abundant bounty?

Among our great scholars, I have seen you as a model,

Too rare to be compared with any peer.

When he delivers lessons, he pours forth a spring,

Easy to drink from, with sweet, flowing waters.

And if he sets his reed pen running, it passes round

Pure, unmixed wine to the minds.

His is the inspiration that comes like a rainstorm,

With brilliant lightning and showers of dew.

For its abundant flow quenches the thirsty,

And its radiance guides the lost.

May God guard it—a university that won

Us honor in place of an age of humiliation,

Through beneficence that time had never before granted

To a people from a guest within their domain.

It cured bodily ailments and went further,

    Restoring health to ailing character.

And nourished its students with knowledge,

Thus bringing forth the learned from the ignorant.

And made virtues grow in its sons,

Like the growth of fertile fields.

If we sought to repay what we owe

To it, or even part of it, is there a way?

I long for its landmarks, and I love

The qualities of its gallant, noble dean.

A man whose traits are adorned with nobility

That restrains the pride of long-established rank.

And around him, in every field, I revere

    A gathering of eminent professors.

Alike in the perfection of their character,

But not alike in their fields of learning.

When they honor Jabr, their brother,

It is the tribute one worthy man owes another.

And the scholar most deserving of glory is a sage

Who has perfected learning with good character.

Pure of heart, he lived needing none to excuse him

For a fault, and lived with none to reproach him.

Take pride, O jubilee celebrant: this

Is the reward for your great and lengthy toil.

Delegations have flocked to you, praising

You, from rugged country and from plains.

And offered roses from the gardens of gratitude,

Sweet of scent and safe from withering.

    فَهَلْ أَرْجُو لَهَا حُسْنَ القُبُولِ

    And I have made the message bear my congratulations;

So may I hope it will be graciously received?

I sent with it to you a messenger of truth,

And your kindness to the messenger is enough for me.
