وَلاand no رُقِيَّadvancement بِغَيْرِwithout العِلْمِknowledge لِلأُمَمِfor nations
Through knowledge, one readily attains the highest glory,
With knowledge, the zenith of glory is attained by nations,
And nations cannot advance without knowledge.
And without knowledge, nations cannot progress.
يَاO مَنْthose whom دَعَاهُمْhe called them فَلَبَّتْهُso answered him عَوَارِفُهُمْtheir generous gifts

O you whom he called, whose generous gifts answered him,
O you whose nobility responded when you called them,
For your generosity, his thanks are the garden's thanks to steady rains.
The meadow's gratitude for your generosity is everlasting.
يَحْظَىis favored أُولُوpossessors of الْبَذْلِgiving إِنْif تَحْسُنْare good مَقَاصِدُهُمtheir intentions

بِالبَاقِيَاتَwith lasting things مِنَof الآلاءِbounties وَالنِّعَمِand blessings
Those who give, if their intentions are good, are favored
Those who generously intend good are granted lasting kindness,
With lasting bounties and blessings.
With ever-renewed favours and blessings.
فَإِنْfor if تَجِدْyou find كَرَماًgenerosity فِيin غَيْرِother than مَحْمَدَةٍpraiseworthiness

For if you find generosity where no praise is due,
If you find generosity without merit,
An instrument of death may indeed lie in the grapevine.
It can become an instrument of death, even in generosity.
مَعَاهِدُinstitutions العِلْمِof learning مَنْwhoever يَسْخُوgives generously فَيَعْمُرُهَاand so builds them up

Whoever gives freely and builds institutions of learning
Supporters of knowledge freely provide for it to flourish
Builds stairways toward a lofty future.
And build steps to the future, ever ascending.
وَوَاضِعٍand one laying حَجَراًa stone فِيin أُسٍّthe foundation of مَدْرَسَةٍa school

And one who lays a stone in a school's foundation
One who lays but a stone in the foundation of a school
Is of more lasting benefit to his people than the pyramid's builder.
Remains longer in his people's memory than high pyramids.

How vast the gulf between a house that renews
How different are buildings erected for the strengthening of nations
The strength of nations, and a house that guards decaying bones!
And those tending only cold stone and rubble.
لَمْdid not يُرْهِقِburden الشَّرْقَthe East إِلاَّexcept عَيْشُهُits living رَدَحاًfor a long time

Nothing wore down the East but living for so long
Only indolence, nurtured by ignorance and docile nations,
With ignorance its shepherd and its peoples like cattle.
Has wearied the Orient with endless drudgery.

Enough for it is the past heedlessness that lasted
Let the oblivion it has known suffice it now;
An age; now the time has come for its rebirth from nothingness.
The time has come for it to rise from nothingness.

Today, even in thirst, a drink is denied
Today, he who lacks insight and wisdom
To anyone not alert, clear-sighted, and discerning.
Is denied water at the fountain to quench his thirst.
اليوْمَtoday يُحرمُis denied أَدْنَىthe least الرِّزْقِsustenance طَالِبُهُits seeker

Today, even the least sustenance is denied its seeker;
Today, the lowest sustenance is forbidden to its seeker.
So put your mind to work; you will not be deprived, and will gain.
So rouse your mind, do not lose this chance to win.
وَالجَمْعُand the community كَالْفَرْدِlike the individual إِنْif فَاتَتْهُeludes it مَعْرِفَةٌknowledge

And the community, like the individual, if knowledge eludes it,
Individuals and groups alike, if lacking knowledge,
Is swept away by the onslaughts of injustice and darkness.
Will be overwhelmed by darkness and gloom.
فَعَلِّمُواso teach عَلِّمُواteach أَوْor لاno قَرَارَrest لَكُمْfor you

So teach, teach—or there is no rest for you,
Educate, educate, or you will find no rest,
And no escape from calamities and sorrows.
No escape from afflictions and worries.
ربُّواeducate بَنِيكُمْyour sons فَقَدْfor indeed صِرْنَاwe have come إِلَىto زَمَنٍan age

Educate your sons, for we have reached an age
Raise your children, for we've come upon an age
In which people have taken flight like eagles and vultures.
In which people fly like starlings and ostriches.

If we crawl along, what good are a resolute man's prods
If we march in step, no resolute group
Among us—may you be guided—and what escape has one seeking refuge?
Can be split by us; you were guided by us, no protection in resistance.
ياO رُوحَspirit of أَشْرَفَthe noblest مَنْwho فَدَّىransomed مَوَاطِنَهْhis native lands

O spirit of the noblest man who ransomed his native lands
O soul of the noblest man who ransomed his homelands
With his death, after long toil and sickness,
With his death after long struggle and ill health.

I seem to see you fluttering in the assembly
I can see you in the club, fluttering about us,
Before us, and as though the voice had never departed.
As if your voice still stirs the air.
فَفِيfor in مَسَامِعِنَاour ears مَاwhat كُنتِyou were مُلْقِيَةًuttering

For our ears still hold what you used to utter
In our hearing still echo the words you spoke
In gatherings such as ours: gracious words.
When we were, as now, receptive to your wise speech.

And in our hearts is a stirring from your radiance, now
And hearts still quiver with your image, lit up
Unveiled by a flash like lightning's flash in darkness.
As with the flash of lightning in the dark of night.
تُوصِينَنَاyou charge us بِتُرَاثٍwith a legacy نَامَslept صَاحِبُهُits owner

You entrust us with a legacy whose owner has fallen asleep,
You enjoined us to an inheritance its owner neglected,
Away from it, perforce, while the eye of time has never slept.
Obliged by circumstance, while the days slept on.

We hear and obey, without weakness or weariness,
Hearing and obeying, unflagging, unwearied,
The caller whose voice has long been heeded.
The voice of the caller, so long obeyed.

The house is thriving and radiant, as of old,
The club prospers still, as it did, blossoming
And the people live up to the good hopes placed in their resolve.
Among a people of generous thoughts and determination.

They support it, as they did before, and it has remained
They still defend it as they did; it remains
Shade and light for the deprived and the orphaned.
A haven for the deprived, the orphaned.
إِنَّindeed الْفَقِيرَthe poor person لَهُfor him فِيamong قَوْمِهِhis people ذِمَمٌclaims

Indeed, the poor man has claims upon his people,
The destitute have claims to fulfill among their people,
And charity is a way of fulfilling obligations:
And charity meets such obligations.

A profitable trade in the path of God,
Trade for the sake of God is profitable,
With it, the generous man buys pardon from punishment,
The generous man ransoms himself thereby from vengeance.

And seeks more bounty from his Provider's grace,
And draws increase from his Lord's bounty,
And seeks help against ailments and hardships.
Seeking help against want and days of scarcity.
دَامَتْmay it endure لِمِصْرَfor Egypt عَلَىthrough الأَيَّامِthe days رِفْعَتُهَاher eminence

May Egypt's eminence endure through the ages,
May Egypt's eminence through the days continue,
And may every copious downpour and steady rain fall upon her.
May she be irrigated by every streaming source.
لَوْif أَنَّهَاthat she بَاهَتِvied in pride with الأَمْصَارَthe cities قَاطِبةًall together

Were she to boast before all the cities
Were she to eclipse all other nations in splendor
Of her excellence, she would be justified; so may she live and endure!
She would deserve it; so may she live and endure!
