وَقَضَىand completed نَحْبَهُhis allotted life مُحِباًa lover شَقِيَّاunhappy
This youth lived as an unhappy lover,
This youth lived loving miserably
And died as an unhappy lover.
And spent his sighs loving miserably
وَبَكَىand wept دَمْعَtears عَيْنَيهِhis eyes فِيin سُطُورٍlines
جعلَتْهmade him عَلَىover المَدَىthe course of time مَبكِيَّاwept over
And wept the tears of his eyes into lines
And shed tears from his eyes in lines
That made him mourned through the ages.
That made him forever weeping
مُنْشِدٌa singer لِلْغَرَامِof passionate love لَمْdid not يَشْدُsing إِلاَّexcept
كَانَwas إِنْشَادُهُhis singing نُواحاًa lament شَجِيَّاplaintive
A singer of love—whenever he sang,
A singer of passion who sang naught but
His singing was a plaintive lament.
Songs of profound lament
شَاعِرٌa poet كَانَwas عُمْرُهُhis life بَيْتَa verse تَشْبِيlove poetry (partial word)
بٍcompletion of 'love poetry' وَكَانَand was الأَنِينُthe groaning فِيهِin it الرَّوِيَّاthe rhyme consonant
A poet whose life was a verse of love-
A poet whose life was but a house of longing
poetry, and groaning was its rhyme.
Wherein sorrow was the refrain
فَاقْرَئِيso read شَرْحَthe account حَالِهِhis state وَاعْجَبِيand marvel مِنْat
ذَلِكَthat القَلْبِthe heart كَيْفَhow بَاتَbecame خَلِيَّاfree of care
So read the account of his state, and marvel at
So read the tale of his state and wonder
That heart—how it came to be free of care.
How that heart stayed vacant
إِنَّindeed فِيin نَظْمِهِhis verse لَحِسّاًsurely a feeling لَطِيفاًdelicate
بَاقِياًlingering مِنْهُfrom him فِيin السُّطُورِthe lines خَفِيَّاhidden
Indeed, in his verse is a delicate feeling,
For in his verse there is subtle sweetness
Lingering from him, hidden in the lines.
Lingering in lines hidden
فَاذْرِفيso shed دَمْعَةًa tear عَلَيْهِfor him تُعِيدِيyou will restore
وَرَقَpaper الطِّرْسِthe manuscript بِالحَيَاةِwith life نَدِيَّاdewy
So shed a tear for him; you will make
Shed a tear for him that would
The manuscript's pages dewy with life again,
Revive the leaves with life anew
وَتُثِيرِيand you will stir مِنْfrom رُوحِهِhis spirit نَسَمَاتٍbreezes
وَتُفِيحِيand you will waft مِنْهَاfrom them عَبِيراًa perfume ذَكِيَّاfragrant
And stir breezes from his spirit,
And stir from his soul gentle breezes
And waft from them a fragrant perfume.
Exhaling from them a scent refreshed
