They brought me a garden fashioned

For the cup, surrounded there by flowers.

    أَلحَاظُها تَسْطُو وتَنْكَسِرُ

    And the cup is naked, like a virgin;

Gazes upon her grow bold and falter,

Thirsting for her when she was flushed

By modesty's hue and graced by bashfulness.

And a lamp peered out, gazing upon her,

Enamored, as though its ray were a gaze.

It draws away, and into her depths sinks

A sun whose horizon is ringed with bright stars.

And when it draws near, the sun has already set,

And a moon floats on the surface of the wine.

These are her wonders, and the most wondrous of them

Is that gloom should settle beside her.
