مَعَرَّةthe disgrace of الظلْمِinjustice عَلَىupon مَنْwhoever ظلِمْcommitted injustice
وَحُكْمُand the judgment of مَنْwhoever جَارَacted unjustly عَلَىupon مَنْwhoever حَكَمْpassed judgment
The shame of injustice falls upon whoever commits it.
The recognition of oppression upon the oppressed,
And the unjust man's judgment falls upon the one who passed it.
And the judgment of one who tyrannizes upon one who judges,
وَإِنَّand indeed مَاwhat أُوخِذْتَyou were reproached زُوراًfalsely بِهِfor it
بَرَاءةُthe innocence of الصِّدْقِtruthfulness وَغُرُّand the finest الشِّيَمْcharacter traits
And what you were falsely reproached for
And indeed whatever you were wrongfully accused of
Is truth's innocence and the finest virtues.
Is the innocence of truthfulness and the shame of morals.
وَمَاand what عَلَىupon النورِthe light إِذَاif سَطَّرُوthey inscribed
عَلَيْهِupon it عَيّباًa blemish بِمِدَادِwith the ink of الظُّلَمْdarkness
And what harm comes to light if they inscribe
And there is no blemish upon the light when they
A blemish upon it with the ink of darkness?
Write upon it faults with the ink of darkness.
وَفِتْيَةٍand young men إِنْif تَتَنَوَّرْyou examine closely تَجِدْyou will find
وِيunclear as written قُضَاةٍjudges خَدَمْservants
And young men—if you look closely, you will find
And noble youths, if they shine, will find
[Unclear word in the source] judges—servants.
The humility of honorable judges.
هَمُّواthey resolved بِأَنْto يَنتَقِصُواthey belittle فِيamong الوَرَىhumankind
خُلُقاًa character عَظِيماًgreat فَسَمَاso it rose وَاسْتَتمّْand reached perfection
They sought to belittle, among humankind,
They intended to detract in the land
A noble character; so it rose and reached perfection.
A great character, but it rose high and prospered.
وَحَاوَلُواand they tried أَنْto يَصِمُواthey stigmatize فَاضِلاًa virtuous man
بِمَاwith what أَبَىrefused اللهGod لَهُfor him وَالكَرَمْand nobility
And they tried to stigmatize a virtuous man
And they tried to defame a virtuous one
With what God and nobility would not allow him.
With what God refused for him and generosity.
فَسَوَّدُواso they blackened أَوْجُهَthe faces of أَحْكَامِهِمْtheir judgments
وَابْيَضَّand grew white وَجْهُthe face of الفَاضِلِthe virtuous man المُتهَمْthe accused
So they blackened the faces of their judgments,
So they blackened the faces of their rulings,
And the accused virtuous man's face grew white.
While the face of the virtuous accused one whitened.
