مَاتَdied الرَّئِيسthe president فَصَارَand went كُلَّevery مَسِيرَةٍjourney
ذَاكَthat النَّعيَّdeath announcement وَطَارَand flew كُلّevery مَطَارِdirection of flight
The president died; along every road went
The president died, so every march
that announcement of death, and it flew in every direction.
Became but to announce that death and mourning filled the airports
مَاتَdied العِصَامِيُّthe self-made man العِظَاميُّthe nobly born man الَّذِيwho
مَاnot كَانَwas بِالْعَاتِيoverbearing وَلاnor الْجَبَّارِtyrannical
Dead is the self-made, nobly born man who
The stalwart, strongman died, who
was neither overbearing nor tyrannical.
Was neither tyrannical nor authoritarian
مَاتَdied الذِيthe one who مَارَىvied with سِوَاهُothers besides him فِيin الْهَوَىlove
يَوْمَon the day of الْحِفَاظِdefending honor وَعَاشَand lived غَيْرِnot مُمَارِa disputant
Dead is the man who vied with others in love
The one died, who in passion
on the day of defending honor, yet lived without contention.
Lived as a protector, not as one protected
أَقْرِرْestablish مَقَامَكَyour station حَيْثُwherever شِئْتَyou wish فَإِنَّهfor it indeed
لَنَتِيجَةٌsurely an outcome مِنْof ذَلِكَthat الإِقْرَارِdetermination
Fix your station wherever you wish, for it
Acknowledge his status wherever you wish, for it
is surely the outcome of that determination.
Is the inevitable result of that acknowledgment
فَإِذَاso if سَمَوْتَyou rise بِهِwith it تَقَلَّدَit wears a necklace of أَنْجُماًstars

So if you rise with it, it wears a necklace of stars;
If you exalt him, he will be adorned with stars
and if you descend with it, it clothes itself in dust.
And if you belittle him, he will be clothed in dust
وَإِذَاand if غَنِيتَyou grow rich بِهِthrough it تَفَكَّهit delights بِالْعُلاَin the heights

And if you grow rich through it, it delights in the heights;
If you sing his praises, he will smile at sublimity
and if you grow poor through it, it is content with barren wastes.
And if you disparage him, he will be content in desolation
وَأَعَزُّand the dearest مَاwhat تَقْضِيyou decree لِنَفْسِكَfor yourself حَاصِلٌattainable

لَكَfor you إِنْif تُؤَدِّyou render الحَقَّwhat is due بالمِعْيارِby the measure
And the dearest thing you decree for yourself is attainable
The most honourable judgment you pass on yourself
for you, if you render what is due in proper measure.
Is yours, if you fulfil your duty justly

Duties are sorrow and the rending of gallbladders,
Obligations are sorrow and the hardship of pursuits
yet within them is honey for the honey-gatherer.
Yet in them lies the sweetness for the elect
غَيْرُother than الزَّمُوعِthe trembling coward يَهُبُّrises مُضْطَلِعاًshouldering بِمَاwith what

It is no trembling coward who rises to shoulder what
Unlike the feeble, he takes on responsibilities
they inspire, nor any cringing chatterer.
As inspired, unlike the idle prattler

To God belongs the glory of those who taste their torment,
To God is the glory of those who taste His torment,
and the dignity of the one they have worn down with burdens.
And the dignity of those whom gravity has worn down

What glory—the glory of one who plunged into the lions' thicket,
What vessel is as fragile as one who wades into evil
and guarded truth while calamities were beasts of prey!
Yet protects the truth while calamities clash

The sword of fate, having struck Muhammad,
The sword of destiny, having struck Muhammad
struck fidelity with its severing edge.
Attained faithfulness in its keen edge

Not blindness, no no, but wisdom
confirmed through unbroken repetition.
Made firm by continuous repetition

The martyr calls forth a thousand of his like,
The martyr calls for a thousand like himself
and through them the succession of stages is completed.
Through whom the cycles of time are completed

O you who were slain, may your graves be watered
O you who died, may the Bountiful's favor

And the Forgiving's mercy water your graves

We do indeed weep for each one lying lifeless
We cry for every fallen hero
among you, our livers burning for him.
With burning sorrow in our hearts

The throne, the throne of truth, flourishes, adorned
The throne, God's throne, grows purer
with blood flowing upon it in martyrdom.
With the blood spilled on it for martyrdom

And the earth, when watered with the dark blood of innocence,
And the land, when watered from the pure
exults, seized by a tremor of intoxication,
Is adorned and trembles with excitement

with the pride of a bride whose strung jewels have grown precious,
Like the joy of a bride, the order of her jewelry shines
and whose pathways are decked with scattered gifts.
And her paths are strewn with petals

How precious are your souls! For they are not souls
Honor yourselves, for what are souls
spilled into the dust without recompense.
Spilled in the dust if not by a tyrant spilled

In every place where lifeblood from you flowed
In every place of your sacrifice flows
lies the purest and most fertile ground for sowing.
The most blessed and fertile ground for seeds
إِنَّاwe indeed لَنَعْرِفُsurely we know قَدْرَهَاtheir worth وَهْيَand they are الَّتِيthe ones who

We do indeed know their worth, and they are the ones
We know their worth, those which
who gave us a standing among the ranks.
Gave us worth and standing
وَنُجِلُّهَاand we revere them أَبَداًforever بِذِكْرَىremembering أَنَهاthat they

And we revere them forever, remembering that they
And we forever revere them, remembering they
guarded our truth from belittlement.
Shielded our dignity from disgrace

They enhanced the Nile's beauty in our eyes
and the adornment of the palms, and the splendor of blossoms.
And the meadow's adornment and the light's splendor

And into souls, from their souls, drifted
And from their souls into our souls flowed
a fragrance that grew strong, like the scent of flowers.
A sweet fragrance like the wafting of flowers

And it is as though, with heavenly delicacy, they
And as if with heavenly subtlety
adorned for us the shade beneath the trees.
They adorned for us the laden trees
