    The letter came—and how truthful

    it was, a trustworthy messenger!

    It delivered the message and revealed

    many threads of the tale.

    But a calamity grieved me,

    which you described to me plainly,

    in a description where you excelled

    in skill and artistry.

    Oh, what a calamity it was,

    making the heart stream with tears!

    Is that Sara, whose

    beauty used to captivate us?

    And reason had a crown

    that adorned her brow,

    and modesty had a radiance

    that made eyes lower before her.

    And every smile

    from her was a precious gift,

    and every word was like a pearl

    that listeners would catch.

    لَمْ تَبْلُغِ الْعِشْرِينَا

    She died, slain by her passion,

    before she had reached twenty;

    مَرْجُوَّةً لِلْبَنِينَا

    and she was never led forth as a bride,

    hoped to bear sons;

    دُ حَوْلَهَا الشَّادُونَا

    nor was she henna-dyed, nor did

    singers sing around her;

    nor did she gain a single day's reign

    in which eyes would find delight.

    Too grievous is a calamity befalling

    one like her to be taken lightly.

    How, then, when it takes away

    light and leaves clay behind?

    Corruption crept toward her,

    soft-footed and lurking,

    and worked upon her soul until

    it laid her guarded honor open.

    وَكَانَ شَراً مًنُونَا

    Thus it was the heaviest loss,

    and it was a deadly evil;

    and it made life's loss seem slight

    and exalted honor as a creed.

    Oh, if only she had, for the sake of

    chastity, died pierced through!

    Then she would have been borne forth—how grievous

    to all mankind her departure would be—

    الصَّفَا عَلَيْهَا عُيُونَا

    in a scene that would draw

    springs from the rocks in grief for her;

    وَيَنْدُبُ المُنْشِدُونَا

    her women friends would weep there,

    and the reciters would lament;

    and everyone would raise their voice

    in remembrance of her, in eulogy.

    But today she is not

    a dead woman who makes us weep,

    nor one expected to have a husband

    and a family, both virtuous.

    She has become a tomb, and

    chastity lies buried within her.

    She sold beauty for money,

    and it was a losing bargain.

    And money has remained a master

    that enslaves all peoples.

    It led her astray, and long has it

    led the rightly guided astray.

    مِنْ حُسْنِهَا مُسْتَبِينَا

    So look at what survives

    of her beauty, plainly visible;

    for it is only what we do not

    wish it to be:

    بِمَلمَسِ الْفَاسِقِينَا

    a rose turned into embers

    by the touch of the wicked;

    فِي أنْفُسِ الْنَّاشِقِينَا

    a perfume that exudes poison

    into the souls of those who inhale it;

    فِي أعْيُنِ المُبْصِرِينَا

    a light that stretches a pouch

    over the eyes of those who see;

    تُمَثِّلُ المُجْرِمِينَا

    a mirror of chaste character

    that reflects criminals;

    بِخَمْرِهَا الشَّارِبِينَا

    a cup that disquiets, so we leave

    the drinkers thirsty with its wine;

    a sorrowful memory of beauty

    that once held the virtues,

    مِنْهَا لَدَى النَّاظِرِينَا

    then came to be devoid

    of them in the eyes of beholders;

    أحِبَّةٌ آهِلُونَا

    like a garden where

    beloved ones once dwelt;

    then they left it, and it remained,

    making the sorrowful pause.
