أَعْلَىthe highest الجُدُودِthe forebears مَكَانَةًin rank يَنْمِيكِgives you your lineage
أَعْلَى الجُدُودِ مَكَانَةً يَنْمِيكِ
وَأَبُوكِand your father خَيْرُthe best أَبٍfather وَخَيْرُand the best مَلِيكِking
وَأَبُوكِ خَيْرُ أَبٍ وَخَيْرُ مَلِيكِ
The highest-ranking of forebears is the source of your lineage.
And your father is the best of fathers and the best of kings.
مَلَكَتْwon over شَمائِلُهُhis virtues الْقُلُوبَthe hearts فَأَمْرُهُso his command
مَلَكَتْ شَمائِلُهُ الْقُلُوبَ فَأَمْرُهُ
مُتَصَرِّفٌholding sway فِيهَاover them بِغَيْرِwithout شَرِيكِa partner
مُتَصَرِّفٌ فِيهَا بِغَيْرِ شَرِيكِ
His virtues have won the hearts, so his command
Holds sway over them without a partner.
سَكَنَتْfound repose إِلَىin ظِلٍّa shade ظَلِيلٍsheltering لِلنَّدَىof bounty
سَكَنَتْ إِلَى ظِلٍّ ظَلِيلٍ لِلنَّدَى
وَإلَىand in طَرِيقٍa path لِلْهُدَىto guidance مَسْلُوكِwell-trodden
وَإلَى طَرِيقٍ لِلْهُدَى مَسْلُوكِ
They found repose beneath a sheltering shade of bounty,
And on a well-trodden path to guidance,
وَإِلَىand in أَواصِرَbonds مِنْfrom هَوَىlove for عَبَّاسِهَاtheir Abbas
وَإِلَى أَواصِرَ مِنْ هَوَى عَبَّاسِهَا
أَمِنَتْwere safe مِنَfrom الإِيهَاءِweakening وَالتَّفْكِيكِand sundering
أَمِنَتْ مِنَ الإِيهَاءِ وَالتَّفْكِيكِ
And in bonds of love for their Abbas,
Secure against weakening and sundering.
بِنْتَdaughter of العَزِيزِthe mighty one كَفَىit suffices for خِضَابكِyour henna dye أَنَّهُthat it
بِنْتَ العَزِيزِ كَفَى خِضَابكِ أَنَّهُ
لاَno أَثْرَtrace فِيهِin it لِلدَّمِof blood المَسْفُوكِspilled
لاَ أَثْرَ فِيهِ لِلدَّمِ المَسْفُوكِ
Daughter of the mighty one, let this suffice for your henna:
There is no trace in it of spilled blood.
وَكَفَىand it suffices for مَحَاسِنَكِyour beauties الفَرَائِدَthe peerless ones أَنَّهَاthat they
وَكَفَى مَحَاسِنَكِ الفَرَائِدَ أَنَّهَا
بَاتَتْhave become حَوَاسِدَenvious لِلْفَضَائِلِof the virtues فِيكِin you
بَاتَتْ حَوَاسِدَ لِلْفَضَائِلِ فِيكِ
And let this suffice for your peerless beauties: they
Have become envious of the virtues in you.
للهِto God, in admiration مَوْكِبُكِyour procession السَّنيُّsplendid فَإِنَّهمْfor they
للهِ مَوْكِبُكِ السَّنيُّ فَإِنَّهمْ
زَفُّواescorted as a bride العَفَافَchastity بِهِin it وَقَدْand indeed زَفُّوكِescorted you as a bride
زَفُّوا العَفَافَ بِهِ وَقَدْ زَفُّوكِ
How wondrous your splendid procession! For they
Escorted chastity within it when they escorted you as a bride.
لَمْnot يُلْفَwas found قَبْلاًbefore مُوْكبٌa procession بِجلاَلِهِin its grandeur
لَمْ يُلْفَ قَبْلاً مُوْكبٌ بِجلاَلِهِ
وَسِعَmade room for الأَمِيرَthe prince وَضَاقَand was too narrow بِالصَّعْلُوكِfor the pauper
وَسِعَ الأَمِيرَ وَضَاقَ بِالصَّعْلُوكِ
Never before was a procession seen of such grandeur,
Ample for the prince, yet too narrow for the pauper.
مَشَتِmarched الجُنُودُthe troops حِيَالهُbefore it رسِميةًceremonially
مَشَتِ الجُنُودُ حِيَالهُ رسِميةً
فَأَرَتْكِso showed you لِينَthe gentleness of الأُسْدِthe lions فِيin نَادِيكِyour gathering
فَأَرَتْكِ لِينَ الأُسْدِ فِي نَادِيكِ
The troops marched before it ceremonially;
So they showed you the gentleness of lions at your gathering,
وَأَرَتْكِand showed you مِنْof آدَابِهَاtheir courtesies ماwhat لَيْسis not مِنamong
وَأَرَتْكِ مِنْ آدَابِهَا ما لَيْس مِن
عَادَاتِهَاtheir habits فِيin المَأْزِمِthe press of battle المَشْبُوكِentangled
عَادَاتِهَا فِي المَأْزِمِ المَشْبُوكِ
And showed you courtesies that are no part of
Their habits in the tangled press of battle.
يَتَسَلْسَلُونَthey follow in sequence وَلِلنجُومِand the stars have نِظَامُهُمْtheir formation
يَتَسَلْسَلُونَ وَلِلنجُومِ نِظَامُهُمْ
فِيin السَّيرِmotion لَكِنْbut قُيِّدَتْwere bound بِسُلُوكِwith threads
فِي السَّيرِ لَكِنْ قُيِّدَتْ بِسُلُوكِ
They file along, their formation that of stars
In motion, but strung together on threads.
طَوْعاًin willing obedience لِوَالِدِكِto your father الْعظِيمِthe great وَغِبْطَةًand in delight
طَوْعاً لِوَالِدِكِ الْعظِيمِ وَغِبْطَةً
بِصفيِّهin his chosen friend ورِعَايَةًand out of regard لِحَمِيكِfor your father-in-law
بِصفيِّه ورِعَايَةً لِحَمِيكِ
In willing obedience to your great father, and in delight
In his chosen friend, and out of regard for your father-in-law,
وتَجِلَّةًand in reverence لَكِfor you فِيin المَصِيرِgoing إِلىto حِمىًa protected haven
وتَجِلَّةً لَكِ فِي المَصِيرِ إِلى حِمىً
تَبْنِينَyou raise فِيهِin it لِلْعَلاَءِfor glory بَنِيكِyour sons
تَبْنِينَ فِيهِ لِلْعَلاَءِ بَنِيكِ
And in reverence for you as you pass into a haven
Where you will raise your sons for glory.
بَيْتٌa house عَتِيقٌancient فِيin المَفاخِرِglories لَمْnot يَزَلْhas ceased
بَيْتٌ عَتِيقٌ فِي المَفاخِرِ لَمْ يَزَلْ
مُرْتَادَa resort for قُصَّادvisitors وَصَرْحَand a palace of مُلُوكِkings
مُرْتَادَ قُصَّاد وَصَرْحَ مُلُوكِ
A house of time-honored glories, which has ever been
A resort for visitors and a palace of kings.
أَلْيَوْمَtoday تَبْتَهِجُrejoice النُّفوسُthe souls وَلاَand not يُرَىis seen
أَلْيَوْمَ تَبْتَهِجُ النُّفوسُ وَلاَ يُرَى
فِيon أَوْجُهِthe faces of الأَيَّامِthe days غَيْرُother than ضَحُوكِsmiling
فِي أَوْجُهِ الأَيَّامِ غَيْرُ ضَحُوكِ
Today souls rejoice, and nothing is seen
On the faces of the days but smiles.
أَلْيَوْمَtoday تَنْفخُsounds كلُّevery نَافِخَةٍwind instrument بِماwith what
أَلْيَوْمَ تَنْفخُ كلُّ نَافِخَةٍ بِما
عَرَفَتْit has known فأَوْفَتْand so did full justice مِنْof جَمِيلِthe goodness of أَبِيكِyour father
عَرَفَتْ فأَوْفَتْ مِنْ جَمِيلِ أَبِيكِ
Today every wind instrument sounds what
It knows of your father's goodness, doing it full justice.
أَلْيَوْمَtoday تَجْلوكِunveil you as a bride اللِّدَاتُthe female peers وَظِلهُand his shade
أَلْيَوْمَ تَجْلوكِ اللِّدَاتُ وَظِلهُ
فِيin كُلِّevery نَاضِرَةِradiant with الْحِلَىjewels يجلوكِunveils you
فِي كُلِّ نَاضِرَةِ الْحِلَى يجلوكِ
Today your peers unveil you, and his shade
Unveils you amid every woman radiant with jewels.
أَنَّىwherever حَلَلْتِyou dwell رعَتْكِwatches over you حَضْرَتُهُhis august presence فَلاَso you do not
أَنَّى حَلَلْتِ رعَتْكِ حَضْرَتُهُ فَلاَ
تَأْلِينَهُyou fail him بِرّاًin kindness وَلاَnor يَأْلُوكِhe fails you
تَأْلِينَهُ بِرّاً وَلاَ يَأْلُوكِ
Wherever you dwell, his august presence guards you; you never
Fail him in kindness, nor does he fail you.
أُنْهِيI convey إِلَىto مَوْلاَيَmy lord تهْنِئَتِيmy congratulatory greeting كَماas
أُنْهِي إِلَى مَوْلاَيَ تهْنِئَتِي كَما
أَوْحىhas inspired الْولاَءُloyalty وَلَيْسَand it is not بِالمَأْفوكِfalse
أَوْحى الْولاَءُ وَلَيْسَ بِالمَأْفوكِ
I convey my congratulatory greeting to my lord, as
Loyalty has inspired it—loyalty unfeigned.
وَلوِand if اسْتَطَعْتُI were able لصُغْتهَاI would fashion it منْقُوطَةًdotted
وَلوِ اسْتَطَعْتُ لصُغْتهَا منْقُوطَةً
بِالدُّرِّwith pearls حَوْلَaround الْعَسْجَدِthe gold المَسْبُوكِcast
بِالدُّرِّ حَوْلَ الْعَسْجَدِ المَسْبُوكِ
And if I could, I would fashion it, dotted
With pearls around cast gold.
