عَشِيرَةُfellowship الأَحْرَارِthe free men فِيin مَأْتَمِa funeral gathering
عَشِيرَةُ الأَحْرَارِ فِي مَأْتَمِ
حُزْناًin sorrow عَلَىfor أُسْتَاذِهَاits master الأَعْظَمِthe greatest
حُزْناً عَلَى أُسْتَاذِهَا الأَعْظَمِ
The fellowship of free men is in mourning,
The clan of the free in mourning
Grieving for its greatest master.
For their greatest master.
كُلُّevery أَخٍbrother مِنْهُمْamong them لَهُhe has مُهْجَةٌa heart
كُلُّ أَخٍ مِنْهُمْ لَهُ مُهْجَةٌ
تَدْمَىbleeds عَلَىfor ذَاكَthat الأَخِthe brother الأَكْرَمِthe most noble
تَدْمَى عَلَى ذَاكَ الأَخِ الأَكْرَمِ
Every brother among them has a heart
Each brother among them with anguish
That bleeds for that most noble brother.
That bleeds for that most noble brother.
شَاعَspread الأَسَىsorrow فِيin كُلevery رَبْعٍdwelling عَلَىfor
شَاعَ الأَسَى فِي كُل رَبْعٍ عَلَى
ذَاكَthat الأَبِيِّproud الوَادِعِgentle المُقْدِمِvaliant
ذَاكَ الأَبِيِّ الوَادِعِ المُقْدِمِ
Sorrow has spread through every dwelling for
Sorrow spread in every quarter
That proud, gentle, valiant man.
For that most righteous father who went ahead.
وَمَاand no لِلبْنَانَfor Lebanon عَزَاءٌconsolation عَلَىover
وَمَا لِلبْنَانَ عَزَاءٌ عَلَى
مَنْthe one who كَانَwas فِيهِin it بَهْجَةَthe joy المَوْسِمِof the season
مَنْ كَانَ فِيهِ بَهْجَةَ المَوْسِمِ
And Lebanon has no solace for the loss of
And what solace can Lebanon have
Him who was, within it, the season's delight.
For one who was its joy in season.
مُطَهَّرَpurified الشيمَةِcharacter مِنْof رِيبَةٍsuspicion
مُطَهَّرَ الشيمَةِ مِنْ رِيبَةٍ
مُطَهَّرَpurified السيرَةِconduct مِنْof مَأْثَمِsin
مُطَهَّرَ السيرَةِ مِنْ مَأْثَمِ
With character cleansed of suspicion,
Of flawless honor, of flawless conduct
With conduct cleansed of sin.
Cleansed of any blemish or wrongdoing.
كَحَاتِمٍlike Hatim إِنْwhen يُقْرِhe hosts أَضْيَافَهُhis guests
كَحَاتِمٍ إِنْ يُقْرِ أَضْيَافَهُ
كَمَعْنَlike Ma'n إِنْwhen يُعْطِhe gives وَإِنْand when يَحْلُمِhe shows forbearance
كَمَعْنَ إِنْ يُعْطِ وَإِنْ يَحْلُمِ
Like Hatim when he hosts his guests,
Generous as Hatem if he lodges his guests,
Like Ma'n when he gives and when he shows forbearance.
And forgiving as Ma'n if he gives or is forbearing.
كَمْhow many شَادَhe built لِلإِحْسَانِfor charity مِنْof مَعْهَدٍan institution
كَمْ شَادَ لِلإِحْسَانِ مِنْ مَعْهَدٍ
وَشَادَand he built لِلْعِرْفَانِfor learning مِنْof مَعْلَمِa landmark
وَشَادَ لِلْعِرْفَانِ مِنْ مَعْلَمِ
How many an institution he built for charity,
How many a school of virtue he founded,
And how many a landmark he raised for learning!
And how many a monument of knowledge he built.
وَكَمْand how many يَدٍa helping hand عَالَhe sustained يَتِيماًan orphan بِهَاwith it
وَكَمْ يَدٍ عَالَ يَتِيماً بِهَا
وَذَادَand he warded off رَيْبَafflictions البُؤْسِof misery عَنْfrom أَيمِa widow
وَذَادَ رَيْبَ البُؤْسِ عَنْ أَيمِ
And with how many a helping hand he sustained an orphan,
How many a hand he lifted to succor the orphan,
And warded off misery's afflictions from a widow.
And fended off the touch of misery from the helpless.
فَرَحْمَةُso mercy اللهِof God وَرِضْوَانُهُand His favor
فَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَرِضْوَانُهُ
عَلَىupon فَتىًa young man عَاشَlived وَلَمْand was not يُذْمَمِreproached
عَلَى فَتىً عَاشَ وَلَمْ يُذْمَمِ
So may God's mercy and His favor rest
So may the mercy and good pleasure of God
Upon a young man who lived without reproach.
Be upon a youth who lived and was never blemished.
