مَضَىpassed عَهْدُthe days of الصِّبَاyouth فَغَدَوْتَso you became زَوْجاًa husband
مَضَى عَهْدُ الصِّبَا فَغَدَوْتَ زَوْجاً
وَإِنْand even though تَكُyou are بِالحِجَىin intellect وَالفَضْلِand virtue فَرْدَاpeerless
وَإِنْ تَكُ بِالحِجَى وَالفَضْلِ فَرْدَا
The days of youth have passed, and you have become a husband,
The days of youth have passed, so you have become a husband,
though in wisdom and virtue you remain peerless.
Though in intellect and virtue you are peerless.
وَبِتَand you became أَباًa father وَمَاand not خِلْنَاكَwe thought you تَرْضَىyou would be content
وَبِتَ أَباً وَمَا خِلْنَاكَ تَرْضَى
بِغَيرِwith other than وَلاَئِدِthe offspring of الأَفْكَارِthoughts وُلْدَاas children
بِغَيرِ وَلاَئِدِ الأَفْكَارِ وُلْدَا
And you have become a father—we never imagined you would be content
And you have become a father; we never thought you would be content
to have as children any but the offspring of ideas.
With children other than the offspring of thought.
وَقِيلَand it was said اليَومَtoday إِنكَthat you صِرْتَyou became جِداًa grandfather
وَقِيلَ اليَومَ إِنكَ صِرْتَ جِداً
أَحَقاًis it true? إِنthat حَناHanna صَارَbecame جِداa grandfather
أَحَقاً إِن حَنا صَارَ جِدا
And today it was said that you have become a grandfather—
