The crescent has risen; greet the rising herald of the feast.

Greet the bearer of glad tidings that promises will be fulfilled.

O symbol through which minds discern

an unbounded meaning in the wisdom of God.

It is as though this beauty of yours, which fills us with wonder,

were the beauty of a firstborn newly born among the moons.

God has signs in creation, and the most wondrous of them

is their splendor renewed with every renewal.

Youths of Egypt! In calling you, I summon none

    but responders who are free and valiant;

none but rising crescents of learning and letters,

aspiring to excellence that none can deny.

The hidden moon is the emblem of those who follow it,

who act upon its intended meaning.

Since the world's beginning, it has never ceased to tell us

that fullness comes through striving and exertion.

So if you journey toward the forests as it journeys

toward perfection, you have won what you seek.

O feast, you have come as promised, recalling for us

the event among your earliest most deserving of affirmation.

Rather, you were two feasts; in bringing them together

lies a subtle meaning that rejects all separation.

You were brought back as a day that gladdens the believers,

though at first you were no day for celebration.

God's message is not completed without toil

that afflicts the entrusted one, and exile and distress.

If God's message had descended upon a mountain,

it would have crumbled beneath it and become the bottom of a chasm.

And had a sea borne it, it would have blazed with flame,

dried up, and had every boulder tumble into it.

So it is no wonder if the chosen one staggered beneath it

and spent the night in pain from it and sleeplessness.

Intending to depart from family and homeland,

he bore within his breast the sorrows of an anguished man.

He would almost have remained, had he not been overtaken

by God's command, for a purpose promised by Him.

Then, when the people recklessly went too far in harming him

and drove his followers into utter exile,

    فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ سِوَى الرَّهْطِ الصَّنادِيدِ

    he called his loyal followers, resolved upon his migration;

none answered him but the band of stalwarts.

He set out first, with al-Siddiq accompanying him,

braving rugged ground in a rocky wilderness.

Turning his face toward Medina, through

a glorious night, witnessed throughout the ages,

until, when he took the safe cave as a refuge

and slept among its rocks with the sleep of an exhausted man,

a woven tracery hanging at the cave's entrance protected him

from those who had threatened him with the direst threats.

Oh, what faith! Al-Siddiq, awake through the night,

is hurt by a viper and weeps unaided.

Indeed, if faith is sound, though the earthquake that shakes it

destroys towns, it remains a fortress never demolished.

As for the companions who lingered behind, they followed,

traveling by night along every unwatched route.

The troops of Caesar or Kisra, however proudly they boast,

are not like these noble exiles.

In the darkness, with the star their witness, they seem

like knights of a vision, bound for an unfamiliar undertaking.

When the light of dawn reveals them, they seem

like hopes of good passing through the heart of the desert wastes.

Under God's protection, while their spearheads gleam

above the shadows, on long-necked Mahri camels.

Muhammad endured what he endured in his migration

for a praiseworthy purpose in the path of God.

How many campaigns, how many wars he undertook

before returning with established power and support.

Thus life is struggle, and struggle is measured by

the worth of life; whoever gives it as ransom is redeemed.

The lowest struggle is a person's foolish struggle

to preserve a lifespan bound to a fixed limit.

Let every daring soul win life in freedom,

and let every coward seek a crevice in the earth.

And whoever's ambition outstrips the inevitable appointed end

outstrips extinction through a memory never buried.

    لَكِنَّ صَوْتِيَ فِيكُمْ صَوْتُ تَرْدِيدِ

    You already know, and one like me need not tell you;

my voice among you is merely an echo

of what the Guide's migration bore for his nation:

good deeds that prepared it for immortality

and made it sovereign over the whole world,

for as long as it was worthy of sovereignty there.

He appeared while polytheism had followers entrenching it

in every nomad's range, securing it firmly.

The people of ignorance would accept their Creator

only as their servant in the form of an object of worship,

deifying over themselves, from their own handiwork,

    some metals or some boulders.

Arrogant, refusing harm, inexperienced in judgment,

heavy-handed in violence, supple as tender shoots.

In their division, their judgment settles

only in places of scattering and dispersal.

No summons gathers their untamed ones

except like a shout among pale, scattered gazelles.

Nor can they endure any rule but what they conferred

on a standard-bearer whose banner is bound to their whims.

With what forbearance, confidently dispelling ignorance,

and what resolve, humbling the proud chieftains,

did that unlettered youth restore his nation

to one united company of illustrious, noble men!

    بَلْ آيَةُ الحَقِّ إِذْ يُبْغَى بِتَأْييدِ

    That comes next after the Furqan in wonder;

rather, a sign of truth when confirmation is sought.

Two difficult tasks he mastered: uniting their people

and bringing them, after polytheism, to belief in one God.

And he further prepared the ground for his message

through his covenant with the Christians and the Jews,

and by beginning government with consultation, fulfilling through it

what God willed of justice and generosity.

    فَمَنْ يُفَنِّدُهُ أَوْلَى بِتَفْنِيدِ

    This is the truth, upheld by consensus;

whoever refutes it is more deserving of refutation.

    وَبِئْسَ ما قِيلَ شَعْبٌ غَيرُ مَجْدُودِ

    O Muslims of Egypt, earnest endeavor is your religion;

and wretched is the saying, 'an ill-fated people.'

Idleness has lasted long, while the years hasten by,

and a year, once gone, cannot be brought back.

Rise to work that benefits the country; no

speaker helps it by saying, 'O my nation, be sovereign!'

Strive with resolve, for your love is the love of justice,

even if some people regard justice as unloved.

Do not tire, do not grow weary: surely your thirst

is for a pool to which the nations come.

Learn every science, excel, and hold fast

to every noble character trait with firm resolve.

Unshackle minds, and you will move freely,

heedless of feet bound in chains.

Egypt is the heart; if she attains health,

the East, once she is healthy, will not be heart-stricken.

The East is half the world, doing no work

save indulging in what enfeebles and destroys.

The West advances, while the East has no aspirations

save turning to the past and recounting it.

Civilization laments a crippled body in which

one half counts, while the other goes uncounted.

Sons of Egypt, a momentous duty rests upon you:

to revive a lost glory of ancient days.

So let the lion cub return, raised in stature through

you, and let Egypt flourish through you, her neck held high.

How beautiful the age will be when it comes, and our lands

embody true achievement and are remembered with glory!

And East and West are mutual helpers, freed

from any envious schemer plotting against one envied.

Two kindred, dutiful brothers in knowledge and action,

free from every restraint and enslavement.

No deed by either of them misses the good

without the other intervening to set it right.

Nor is there rivalry except in their race

toward what brings benefit to all that exists.

These are the fruits humankind hopes to gather

from every growing, fresh-branched plant in your garden,

for Egypt and the East—indeed, for both horizons together.

Disregard the claims of every defiant enemy of truth.

    فَقَدْ تَبَدَّلَ مَنْحُوسٌ بِمَسْعُودِ

    Pass through your year with God's blessings;

an ill-starred year has been exchanged for a fortunate one.

Your hope forever fills the souls, and it cannot

be dispelled by kindness or weakened by threats.

Success has appeared, and in this crescent you have

glad tidings of fullness before long.

Tomorrow we shall see the full moon, on the sky's parchment, having erased

with its seal of light the black errors of darkness.
